GDP per capita is adjusted to population. Bigger population usually mean greater GDP since you have more workers to tap on. I'd say people there aren't very educated so many cannot afford to take up high quality jobs like chemical Engineers, Doctors, Accountants and Architects. We have like the 2nd or 3rd highest GDP per capita in the world.

The only reason most people want money for is to be able to spend 2 weeks a year in a paradise like Portugal, where there's good weather, good food, friendly people and virtually no crime.

We have it all year round. We are the only country in the world to have had a huge empire to build a nice country and then ended up just poor enough for the minorities not want to come here (outside Lisbon which even to European capital standards is still pretty much native), and just rich enough to enjoy it.
