The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
Common - Finding Forever (2007) >Conscious Hip-Hop
Based on the cover, this looks like it’s gonna be absolute garbage but - hey whaddya know, people in the mid 00s just had shitty taste in graphic design! This album is essentially a continuation of Be on all fronts, with a bit more of a philosophical approach. Common has always seemed a little too “in his head” to be a star and for better or worse, that is reflected on this album. Com spends a lot of his time analyzing the meaning / truth of love, occasionally brushing on social topics like gang violence and stepping outside of his normal comfort zone seldomly.
More romantic songs like “I Want You” and “Drivin Me Wild” verge on too smooth, like parts of Be but Common’s blunt, earnest style ensures he pulls it off. “U, Black Maybe” sounds a lot like Curtis, reflecting on blackness and this concept of the race being stuck in a perpetual state of “maybe?”. It’s a pretty bold topic but it’s also a bit heady and runs away from him at moments. But I guess that’s kind of Common in summary. “So Far to Go” is one of Common’s finest songs, with an amazing D’Angelo hook and a nice jazzy vibe. The production continues the Kanye / Common partnership so as a result, the production is consistently awesome.
A bit overambitious at times but this has some of the best moments from any of his albums - which is saying something. Dude is crazy consistent.
