How could they have made him more convincing?

How could they have made him more convincing?

Like what was missing on a purely technical level?

Besides the original actor obviously.

Directing. Straight up zoom in and closes up is not what you want to do with a CGI figure.

They needed to either have him seen in reflections, from the back, or drastically reduce the scenes he's in.

That's my boi Scorpious

Felt like the framerate of his movement was slightly different from the one represented by actual actors. Too smooth and unnatural. But a damn good attempt.

should have worked on it a little more

That's a silicone bust

eye color is wrong for one, PC had more grey/blue

more shadow to cover the tone discrepancies, they tried to light him up too much and tried to show off their creation thought they'd have learned from tron: legacy although cgi tarkin was far superior to cgi leia battlefront's version looks more realistic

use a practical Peter Cushing puppet

why does he look like a corpse

Was it strictly necessary that he even be in the film and if so, why can't Tarkin just be recast by a new actor?

You try finding an actor willing to eat his own cheeks.

A recast doesn't need to look exactly like Peter Cushing, he just needs to give the same kind of performance so that it feels like the same character. As long as he's an old man with roughly the same stature it will be fine.

Was it 100% CGI? Because if it was, I am impressed.

They should have made him black to round out the diversity quota some more. There were still too many straight white males.

Samuel L. Jackson would have been perfect for the Tarkin reboot

They should have used facial capture instead of animating by hand, he was over-expressive and exaggerated, like a cartoon character.

They only had about five minutes of footage to work with and full-mocap is still mostly done by hand.

This, so much this.
It's like those anime where 3D mecha in 60 FPS move along 24 FPS characters.

Jim Henson is dead and Frank Oz doesn't want to do that anymore.

It was weird because the model was good but the problem was that he "overacted".
It was weird, like someone wearing the skin of Peter Cushing but acting like a saturday morning villain with hand gestures and the like instead of the composed gentleman he was in Star Wars.
In the first one he acted with his mouth and his eyes, some slight movements of the neck.

In this one he gestures like an Italian while going at a different speed from all the other actors.
It's like if someone went to do an "On the Waterfront" remake and had a 100% perfect Marlon Brando CGI puppet acted by Russel Crowe.

This.
Of course, I knew the actor's dead, but it was the lips that stood out the most for me. The way they were animated was somewhat... soft? Can't find a proper word... smooth maybe?
Otherwise, it was decent enough. Knowing the actor is dead alone calls your eye to spot out glaring issues of any kind.

Can't wait until Disney gets it *right* and starts abusing dead and old actors likenesses at their pleasure.

>Gone with the Wind 2
>Casablanca 2: Revenge of the Reich
>Young Schwarzenegger in Action Quips: The Movie

Yeah. You're right. It was too smooth. It wasn't a realistic film movement. It was overly animated.

I'd say maybe one scene would be necessary, but they brought him in for three? four? I think. More than necessary, that's for sure. Which to me was the major problem; they ended up giving him too many lines and every scene he was in I was taken out of the movie.

They should have hired the guys that animated young Robert Downey Jr in Avengers. They blew him up on the screen and I still could not tell it wasn't real.

Even the animator of Young Jeff Bridges in Tron:Legacy. That was done better, and it was like 7 years ago.

i didnt even get he was cgi

Putting lots of makeup on an actor and then polishing doing fx with some software is another thing from creating a full CGI puppet of a dead actor you can't even mocap.

OP, if you're gonna bring this up, at least use an actual pic of the CGI Tarkin (pic related, on the right)--OP's pic is of a bust that was made five years ago.

geeksofdoom.com/2011/05/25/scary-realistic-life-size-bust-of-star-wars-villain-grand-moff-tarkin

Will they make him look better for the blu-ray release and then never release the original again?

He really looked pretty damn good, but the mouth wasn't quite right when he was forming words. Lipi sync is always a big problem with CGI characters.

Taking a guy who looked even a little like him and using makeup and practical effects for fuck's sake.

Looks like the problem with the CGI there is his facial muscles are in a relaxed position but his expression itself isn't. That'd be all that's needed to make it all sorts of uncanny.

Everything looks good to me but the lighting.

CGI always gets lighting wrong.

Should have gotten a human to play him

He was far too 'twitchy'. I don't know how else to explain it. They added these tiny face ticks I'm assuming to convey more emotion, but it had the opposite effect for me. That said, I was fine with the Tarkin and Leia CGI. I knew they were both in there though so I was kinda mentally prepared too.

Leia wasn't CGI

No.

The reason he didn't work because you knew it had to be cgi. Someone unfamiliar with the actor would just think he was creepy.

he ded

Thought he looked amazing all things considered.

Makeup.

Did the Cushing estate get paid by Disney, or can corporate America just steal somebody's likeness with impunity?

Let's play "Is it Peter Cushing or is it a fucking rubber bust."

Vader scene link where?

imagine this tech in ten years.

So if you have no relatives who hold your estate

Disney or any other company can just use your likeness and make a CGI you if youre dead?

It seems really disrespectful honestly.

Its Tarkin. Not Cushing. Theres no difference between making a cg Tarkin and painting a picture of him. Or putting him in a comic book, or a cartoon, or a video game.

This ethics argument is fucking stupid.

I'm so glad you didnt make this movie. Thankfully all you'll probably ever do with your life is post on a mongolian fishing website.

the movie is set IMMEDIATELY before the events of A New Hope, it needed to be the same guy.

Just use the same actor they used for RotS and put some make-up or use less CGI.

also some unused footage and recorded dialog from original star wars. Unused footage was CG'd up a bit so that he looked consistent throughout

so glad they didnt do this, fuck that looks like shit.

That just looks ridiculous and he's probably stiff as fuck. You can't emote with that much prosthetic layered on your face.

CG Tarkin was fine.

This

they have Tarkin in Rebels too, only difference is they put more money into his look here. People getting offended are idiots.

>Besides the original actor obviously.
obvious as it is, this is really what they needed. without the actual cushing on set and talking, from which they could capture/trace his movements, i'm guessing the effects artists had to animate all the face and mouth/speech movements by hand, which is why it looked unnatural (because it literally was unnatural, i.e. it was man-made)

but it looked good. definitely not 'bad'

Studios have had to pay likeness royalties since the 80s.
Pic related, Crispin Glover didn't come back for Back to the Future II, so they did another actor up in makeup and called it a day. When Glover found out, he sued the studio.

He's supposed to be 19 years younger in that pic so you could've gotten away with an actor and makeup

>Dissing Wayne Pygram for Tarkin
Are you guys stupid nig nog losers or what? I mean what did you idiots even major in?

>tfw the original version was absolutely perfect but we got instead

Nobody cares about farscape anymore dude.

his fleash looks vegtable like, unusually healthy and ripe for an old man

It's more akin to re-casting a part and giving the new actor makeup to look like the original actor imo. Still not a big deal.

Literally just have a body double and film him with his back to the camera or only partially revealed.

Would have been so much better.

Good. Don't need shitlords shitting it up with shitty revivals.

Its not ethical, actors have rights

They can refuse to work on projects they don't agree with, ask for rewrites, quit

Its not right to use a CGI corpse to take someones likeness and force them to do a project they might have been revolted and offended by

It turns people into property after death

Either way, the people bringing up some ethics concern are just looking for something to feel good about themselves with. Nobodys actually furious, unless some relative gets shitty and even then they'll just be kicking up a fuss in the hopes they'll get paid for it.

The'd have paid his estate anyway.

never noticed he was cgi the whole time but thought he looked odd. it could easily slip your mind if you aren't paying close attention , but I was also in the second row so yeah

If I recall correctly, they realized he looked too young for RotS (which was set 20 years earlier), so they did a rush job and ended up shooting him from a distance. It doesn't look as bad here.

>"I...I told you to watch it chrissy"
>paully deteriorates into dust

>CGI corpse

Oh fuck off you dramatic turd.

Oh shit how dare this artist draw this! Cushing didn't consent! Hes dead and they're digging up his bones!!

If they'd animated a CG Peter Cushing for some completely unrelated role he had nothing to do with, then yes, there'd be something weird about that. But its Tarkin. Tarkin looks like Peter Cushing. Fucking pissants.

you're an idiot.

god I fucking hate this style, clone wars looked so much better

You die

I pay 5$ for your worthless likeness

I use you as a cgi actor for gay pornos with other dead people

is it ethical

If we're both heavily involved in porn already then yeah, sure.

>I use you as a cgi actor for gay pornos with other dead people

yep, because this is the same thing as a role he already played reusing dialog constantly. Are you actively trying to parody people who are upset about this or are you really this stupid to not see the difference?

I know that feel, bro.

Why is this any different from cg? They made a big rubbery mask of a dead person. How abhorrant! Burn lucasfilm!

Honestly Tarkin didn't look that bad. but Leia looked like she was from Polar Express

exactly. it's all faux-outrage anyway. These people wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they werent crying about something.

I'm not arguing about actor likenesses, senpai.

They should have had him in the shadows and constantly looking out the window. Only seeing his reflection.

I was just replying for the image my dude

That's a cartoon, the animator will take liberties and in the end it's going to going to have little in common with the real Cushing.

On the other hand a live action film has to aim for photo realism, so they'll copy the mannerisms, the face, the voice as best they can. Now you can make Cushing say whatever the you like if you foot the bill. You can make him sell car insurance or happy meals.

Drawing a picture of an actor is not remotely similar to creating a performance for him. You're taking an artist's work and saying "yeah, this is about the same".

For some reason, Shin Godzilla, a fucking micro-budget movie compared to this, was wholly convincing with the lightning.

I still don't know how they did it.

I thought the CGI was convincing except for the eyes. He's got dead, soulless eyes.

you're a very stupid person, hopefully some day you wake up.

Nice argument faggot.

Its the same cartoon, down to the voice actor. It just looks photoreal. The fact that its apparently too realistic for your troubled little soul speaks volumes about how well they did I guess. We can all stop bitching and moaning now.

Emotional arguments and a need to be outraged about something. What else is new.

Goddamn what are we going to do when someone important like Harrison Ford dies? No more video games. Its immoral :)

It's a moot point seeing as Disney paid the Cushing estate for the likeness rights.

Your whole argument is retarded

Likeness to a character is not the same as likeness to an actor

Use Harry Potter as an example. You wouldnt say that the second Dumbledore actor was trying to be a replica of the first actor, they were playing the same character

Cartoons stylize and change things, it is clearly not the actor but the character

Making puppets of dead actors to use for whatever the fuck you want it totally different

They are already using a shitty nu-male cuck to play his younger self instead of relying on CGI or THE OTHER ACTOR WHO LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE A YOUNG HARRISON FORD so don't worry.

I feel like the only reason they did this CGI dead actor shit was to make people talk about the movie

If they had just recast him like a normal person would have, would fans and people who saw the movie really say " NO YOU CANT RECAST HIM, WE WANT A CGI REPLICA OF THE DEAD ACTOR"

There was literally no reason not to just recast

Clone Wars painted the characters in bold strokes. It made them more animated and gave an emotional feedback to them. Rebels is all smooth and lacking substance. I just cannot connect with the characters at all. I watch it because it's Star Wars. But it's shit compared to Clone Wars. Some of the battles in Clone Wars were fucking amazing too. The only redeeming characters in Rebels are Thrawn, Vader and Maul.

For the people discussing the ethics of using Cushing's likeness, if you stayed for the credits (which you should have, as the music is literally half the reason Star Wars is so good), you would notice that Cushing's estate received special thanks.

It's a fucking tragedy that they did not use his younger body double. He was used in some other movie I forget the name of too.

Create a new Moff character and then at the end some Imperial dude could be like "you're being stationed somewhere else Tarkin will take over"

>didnt see the movie

it ends within twenty minutes of new hope starting you fucking idiot, tarkin was clearly working there for a while in a new hope. go fuck yourself.

continuity and out of respect for the one and only Peter Cushing, when I die please recreate me via CGI and let me play coachela with Tupac.

they could have been like "this is an emergency the rebels have the plans, we're putting a better Moff in charge"
