I mean, Daicon IV proved that yes it's possible.
Then there's also this
youtube.com/watch?v=pDuowS15rYI

Probably what's difficult about making them good and why Daicon and X are good ones is because those were made by actual people who worked in the industry of animation.

If it's made by the people who actually worked on the anime, yes.

Look up "crawling amv" on YouTube. Look for the videos from 8 years ago or older.

DyE's Fantasy and the original ME!ME!ME! can sort of be considered AMV's but they are also done by actual animators.

For Fooly Cooly, you could argue the entire show is like one big AMV. The music captures the feeling of the scene so well, its almost like they wrote the scene to match the music

You could arguably claim that there are moments where FLCL borders on AMV, but then again considering who worked on it... yeah, AMVs can be alright, but generally they require the work of an animator to pan out right. One that I would consider a case of the whole thing working backwards is the clip for Bump of Chicken's "Answer", which was the first opening for Sangtasu no Lion - the band are known fans of the manga, so they did the opening and later the song was turned into what basically boils down to an AMV directed by the same guy that directed Madoka.

I don't think you can compare animating a short to splicing video clips with nightcore music.

>Can AMVs be cool?
absolutely

sometimes a particular visual/song just match up really really well. eg
youtube.com/watch?v=_UE490rgOCU

Back in the past, AMV Hell showed me that good AMVs/ideas exist, but are hard to execute well. A lot of the better ones from those compilations worked because they were short snippets with a single idea behind them (usually to make a joke).

AMVs are pretty cool, the problem is the people that make them usually put some bullshit song like Drowning Pool or Linkin Park. I like to sometimes take already made AMVs set to popular songs then mute them and play a better song over it, sometimes slowing it down or speeding it up to match the tempo. It adds a lot to music.

Probably.

I was going to post the Daytona 500 video but it looks like it's been taken down everywhere, gdi

But yeah like anything else, there's a lot of crap AMVs out there but there's good stuff too. Don't go overboard with effects, for the love of god pick a fitting song, and remember timing is the most important thing.

yes

I remember everyone going crazy for this one back in the day

rap AMVs are cringe
i wish this was an AMV
youtube.com/watch?v=YFi4FTOuqKk

Yes but most of them are the same
>skillet/starset/linkinpark/evanescense
>film grain filter
>shaky cam
>all the edgy moments concentrated into a 4 minute package

basically

>tfw first got access to the internet right at the very beginning of middle school
>one of the earliest videos I watched on YouTube back in those days (08-09 or some shit) was a Zelda Wind Waker AMV set to Wonderboy by Tenacious D
>Still associate those two things with each other whenever either of them come to my attention

I believe this one was done by the guy from Lain.
Glay is a great band by the way.

Was this it?

Yes, actually.
>August 2006
God, fuck you OP I wasn't ready to remember something this old at 2 in the morning.

anime is bad, making an amv is like polishing a turd.

I take it you weren't even a fetus in the 80s when Akira came out and caused a world wide phenomenon.

>Don't go overboard with effects
Depends on the song, the more layered song is the more effects are justified
