I think these people should be called the nu-left or nu-liberals.
Lefties used to be chilled out dudes who just want to save the whales, smoke doobies and wanted to be able to fuck women of different colours despite it not being politically correct.
Back in the day the left protested over stuff that mattered such as the Vietnam war.

The old left was more classic liberal, freedom and individualism, they were gradually overrun with Marxists who want to divide everyone into groups then control and wreck everything until there is a revolution.
It's become more and more of a religion in the vacuum left as religion is undermined, which is exactly what their leaders want and have always worked towards.

You're actually describing the "New Left".
Basically, the "Old Left" (labor/socialists) in America died out in the 1960s, replaced by the "New Left" who cared mostly about social liberalism and ending the Vietnam War. The contemporary left seems to be the direct descendant of the "New Left" but taking the social liberalism to strange, authoritarian conclusions, almost like a "social communism". They don't seem to be particularly focused on economics, they're just vaguely critical of capitalism.
Myself and all of my friends have reported none of the Sup Forums SJW meme shit in any of their STEM or business courses.
If we're getting into tinfoil territory, I almost suspect that big business encourages this to some extent. It's a lot easier when you can placate the left-wing with "Gay Pride Oreos" instead of addressing economic inequality.

The labor movement in the U.S. was damaged pretty badly in the first half of the 20th Century. This coupled with the post-WWII affluence led to American leftists shifting their focus to social liberalism. Other Western leftists then started copying the American "New Left" because it was cool.
