I had an inkling towards the 70s but that really reenforced the feeling.

Wish for that brief sort of 60s moment where you had a sort of Wilsonite idea that government intervention could genuinely improve people's lives directly, rather than the later Governmental-Corporate synthesis we wound up with. It's not even a leftist position - it's not the actual improvement I'm after, it's just that sort of sense of unqualified benevolent technocratic optimism. (As opposed to the more cynical technocracy seen now, trying to "nudge" people to behave in market-optimal ways, to be "consumers" of public services, etc.)

I get a very international sense from the 90s though rather than just localising it here. Places like Singapore and Hong Kong have a lot of appeal, though that may just be because family were always sending postcards.
