Has anyone else had bad experiences with Epiphones? I can only get my hands on budget guitars, so no Gibsons, but I even prefer other budget brands to Epiphones. I'll take a Squier, Fender MIM, Ibanez, Yamaha, literally anything other than an Epiphone, anyday of the week. I've played or owned five Epiphones and they never "Wowed" me. The necks on the two that I owned actually ended up warping rather quickly and one had a cracked body (cosmetic, yeah but still). I had heard they were hit or miss guitars, but I've never had such a poor experience with any other brand, even cheaper ones.
I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like them. I'd be willing to try a Gibson Les Paul or SG, but Epiphone? Am I alone here?

Seriously speaking though, if you could get lessons in person from either an actual music teacher or someone you trust that'd be the ideal way of learning. I've always considered Youtube a complementary way to learn just a few tricks or songs I have trouble with, but I would never rely on it for the important learning. Think of this as if you were learning to speak a language, there might be youtubers teaching you to say a few Chinese words but you will definitely not be able to go to China and dialogue with people there just with that.

I used to be one of those guys who considered himself the smartest guy in town and I was sure I'd learn everything with just Youtube, and soon I realized I was wrong. I went to a teacher and in two years I was already capable of playing modes. Meanwhile youtubers can't even teach you scales properly.

It all depends on how far you want to go with guitar anyway.

I'd say 50-60 bucks a month for weekly classes is a fair deal.
If you are beginner, weekly. You might need a whole week to practice and memorize what your teacher just taught you.

the vox head? it's okay, gonna replace the tubes with some mullards and i'm gonna put either a greenback or alnico blue in the cab and that supposedly does wonders. I don't really crank it too much, and generally keep it attenuated to 1/4 watt while recording. It's got the attenuator that switches between 1/4, 1, and 4 watt. Perfect for small studio work or practice at home.

Gonna be looking at a different head soon, maybe an orange micro terror or micro dark. I'd like something that does a metal/industrial heavy fuzz/distortion a little better.

I doubt it'd sound like ass. You'd definitely be able to EQ your other instruments so that they sound better than they would without any EQ'ing, but it's still not going to give you the definition or level of control you'd get in a DAW.
