not at all, do people actually think this was bad?
it's usually ranked pretty low in the NIN LP catalog
I think the fact that people were initially expecting a more ambitious, weird album back when it was going to be called 'Bleedthrough' and had a sci-fi flavor and then, after that got dropped, was described by Trent as "13 hard punches to the face" or whatever it was affected the initial reception to it. None of the songs were a punch to the face at all. A lot of unmemorable tracks but still a pretty okay album though (Right where it Belongs is the standout.)
It was an 00's Pretty Hate Machine. An investment album meant to build off of until Hesitation Marks, which was the blueprints to the New EPs
Compared to other NIN albums, it was average. Not bad, just not amazing. I love a few songs on it but some I always skip. This is coming from a die-hard NIN fan.
Their best album, desu
maybe
No, it wasn't bad but it's not one of his best. There are some really great tracks on it
Everyday is exactly the same
Getting smaller
The line begins to blur
Beside you in time
Right where it belongs
Home (this is a track that was only included on the japanese version or something. Go listen to it)
I seem to remember the japanese version of this album having a really great alternate version of right where it belongs
>I seem to remember the japanese version of this album having a really great alternate version of right where it belongs
youtu.be
Also there is no way Home should've been left off this album.
some nin fans i know love this and think year zero is garbage. no opinion is right. i only like the song 'only' off this, personally.
i mean realistically it's an album that had to be made just to get The Nine Inch Nails going again.
in this case it meant more songy songs. the b-sides (Non-Entity, Not So Pretty Now, Home, etc) only prove that it would never have managed instrumental breaks / segues or excessive ambiance. it just needed to be a rock record.
The Slip is a With Teeth redo.
It came after the 10/10 The Fragile album.
Everyone was expecting some kind of new big leap in sound but instead we got something way smaller in magnitude than his previous two albums.
Discipline is one of the catchiest fucking songs that NIN has ever done.
This desu.
Everyone's expectations were set way too high after TDS and The Fragile. With Teeth and Hesitation Marks are actually great but everyone else seems to think they're shite.
With Teeth is like the red sports car an aging man gets during his midlife crisis.
I mean, the car is still a good looking car, but the context and image it brings into mind is kinda cringey. The album feels like Trent going "Hey I'm still young look at me playing rock'r'roll with my pals like Dave Grohl! Did I mention I'm friends with QOTSA?"
Is Sunspots slept on or am I the only person that loves that song?
With_Teeth kicks ass, going for another grand conceptual complex album would be kind of tiring, I think it's important to have some albums in your discography that are just straight rockers. And With_Teeth's just that. I think it's amazingly relatable album.
Probably not the weakest NIN album, that one I'd personally give to the Pretty Hate Machine, With_Teeth has better pacing and keeps me much more emotionally involved.
There are some stellar moment, like All The Love In The World.
The biggest danger With_Teeth faces is that sometimes it sounds too "just" rockish and clean, I think The Slip is a much better album overall, it is a better rocker while also having a very distinct sound, something With_Teeth struggles with, there and there.
Not going to lie, when Trent returned to complex sounds, textures and concepts in Year Zero, I was really really happy.
naw man it's an album highlight
It is loved, the three last tracks are master pieces.
It was the transition album between Trent and Tront. Also he made the mistake of asking Rick Rubin for advice.
Press F to mourn his long hair
Hesitation Marks was pretty greatly perceived and in general the response has been positive, as it should be, it's a great fucking album.
Love is Not Enough is one of my favorite NIN songs, I don't have a problem with with teeth at all. The lyrics give some feels since the album is about reznor getting sober
Yes.
Quality shitpost.
As you've seen firsthand, nobody thinks it's bad, but in the leadup to this album's release Trent was being hailed as the Bowie of the digital revolution, and then he turns around and shits out some (good) radio rock.
You know who else did that?
Bowie...
PS: I don't condone this comparison beyond surface level, please don't reply if you're offended because I agree. Why don't you fuck my wife too?
Worst band in the world
Bowie didn't get that much shit for it though.
After huge projects like TDS and Fraggle, Teeth was the logical step
IS SOMEBODY ON TOP OF MEEE
I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T KNOW
Logical, sure. An asshole would say that 's no justification for the dip in quality.
I guess criticism of something for not being a masterpiece is a compliment to the artist in a sense.
HM was pretty weak IMO. Referred to on their own website as the band's most accessible album (or something to that effect) and it was even released through a major label. Also supported with TV appearances like Kimmel and Austin City Limits.
If anything was a "pay the bills" record post-WT, it was HM. And Not The Actual Events, thankfully, had nothing to do with it.
I thought Getting Smaller, You Know What You Are? and The Collector were pretty punchy. But 13 total, certainly not.
How to spot a NIN pleb part 1:
>he thinks that NTAE is better than Hesitation Marks
I wasn't even aware that people thought it was bad. It's my favourite NIN album and it's not even close.
Oh, you know it. I'm such a pleb that every time I feel like listening to Into The Void, I have to take a moment to decide which official release I want to hear it on.
Trent doesn't see "accessibility" as a bad thing
I mean, if nothing else, The Slip, Year Zero and Add Violence are all better than Hesitation Marks
This is not plebbish, Into The Void is awesome no matter what version you're listening to, Slipping Away kicks ass too
Year Zero, maybe. The Slip, no. Add Violence, fuck no.
Network soundtrack and Slip are his best albums.
Slipping Away does indeed kick ass. I was referring to choosing between the version off The Fragile or the Australian single.
I didn't say it is. Was merely challenging the notion that an investment record like HM could be a blueprint for the [mostly experimental] EPs. NTAE came out of nowhere and was especially fresh after HM.
>Add Violence, fuck no.
I'll agree with that one.
Slip, yes, Add Violence may have been a stretch
Thanks user, had no idea about this
Only didn't really suit the atmosphere it came out in
it's harder to comprehend now, not just because the internet means people can readily and easily enjoy any sort of music they want, so everyone enjoys pop+rap+IDM+rock+etc/etc and 'scenes' are dead, but like, With Teeth just didn't click with anything else that came out in 2005, before, or relatively after, and it wasn't really what people were expecting as a 'full' album follow-up after the manic success that was the fragile
people expected trent to keep being angry and theatrical and it was a big step back
i enjoy it a lot after the fact but it's, well it's not easy, but you can sort of appreciate why it washitting all the wrong buttons back in 2005
...
But he is angry in the album, quite a lot
I love it. The title track is particularly sexy, in general it's a much more laid back sound which I like. Never really understood why people prefer Year Zero
No one was expecting anything other than for Trent to OD and die. I can tell you're underage
i think with "scenes" there comes a point where the members of the scene are ready to move on and they're looking for an excuse and even a pretty good album can be played down as bad. for example if you were a teenager and listened to EBM and entry level industrial and liked dressing goth and going to parties and you don't dress goth or go to parties anymore and you're trying to find an excuse to keep listening to this style of music it might just be easier to say "this is trash now" even if it isn't
>Still only a 7
absolutely disgusting
If you hate all the industrial influences, then that's your go to album.
you should've seen the original.
here, see the original.

With Teeth is the best album by NIN
>The Hand That Feeds
>Every Day Is Exactly The Same
>Title Track
How can an album with these many 10/10s not be their best? Only one that is close is The Fragile if you remove the first half.
weak b8
>these many
that's three.
Year Zero is better than With_Teeth in every way pretty much, conceptually, musicallity, it was a true return to form, may be one of NIN's best releases too.
I LET YOU PUT IT IN MY MOUTH
Why?
Yes it was. /thread
Fuck off
/thread
No you. /thread
*deletes the collector, getting smaller and with teeth* wtf it’s perfect
All those three tracks are awesome, delete "The Hand That Feeds" instead.
delete yourself.
The Hand That Feeds is thrash, in The Collector Trent at least delivers a raw dlivery, same for Getting Smaller.
The title track is far better than any of these tracks, just for that quiet part alone.
With Teeth is FAR from bad, but still ranks as one of Trent's worst (considering the rest of his discography)
I think Pretty Hate Machine is his worst.
No. I'd say it's one of the less interesting NIN albums, but given it was Trent's first album sober it's understandable. He was obviously just trying to find his footing again. Also, it made for a pretty good introductory album for me.
Three more than many other NIN albums have. That being said, it is one of the least consistent NIN albums since it has a handful of the his worst songs.
With Teeth holds a special place for me. I was born in 91 and With Teeth was my first NIN album. I heard The Hand That Feeds on Fuse and later "Only" and was really interested at that point. I was into all the typical punk/alt rock fuse and 90s bands (RHCP, Nirvana, White Stripes, Sum41) at that point, and these songs were accessible enough to my tastes at the time but more unique and and out there then what i was used to. Then i found out that NIN was only one guy Trent Reznor and that blew my mind. I didnt even realise you were allowed to make music by yourself under a Band sounding name and could get away with it. I bought With Teeth and only about half of it resonated with me at first, but the first time i heard the closing track i fell in love. I had never heard anything like that, made up completely of synths and piano. I was really into playing keyboard at the time and was always left feeling empty with the lack of electro synth use and instead just using guitars. With Teeth definitely isnt the best NIN album, but its still great. I think Trent knew what he was doing by making an album that he was proud of but also was capable of capturing alot of new fans who didnt grow up on TDS and TF. I understand why alot of old school fans were let down by it, but it was an important part of NIN staying fresh and relevant.

Not including any of the EPs, With_Teeth has easily the least ammont of worth-while NIN songs, most of it is really kinda rocky.
