You're absolutely right, OP.
His first album WAS his peak. Good call.

Probably the Ramones. They made good albums afterwards, but that was their high point.
Definitely Guns N' Roses.
Patti Smith, Horses is pretty iconic.
Maybe the Band, but I personally prefer the Brown Album.

I feel like maybe this is true, but I still like Pinkerton more
I'm paraphrasing, as I can't find the exact quote, but Jimmy Iovine said something to the effect with regards to the sophomore slump, that a band will spend 6-10 years writing and jamming before signing and putting together their first release as their best representation collected of their best stuff, and a just a year making the follow up which usually gets recorded when they get off tour.
I think that's why the pattern is so predominant. A lot of bands start at the peak due to having explored the sound thoroughly by the time its shared. Where do you go from there?
It's kind of a blessing getting signed quickly. Your best days are ahead. Brand New started as a run of the mill pop punk band before they got to their 3rd official record.
this was way better than anything he made after it, like incredibly better. still not as good as his frist eps though
