I was told amps with multieffects built in are worse than a multieffects pedal and typical amp, which is worse than several individual pedals and typical amp.
If it's all digital, what's the difference?

They're just snake oil. The biggest problem with pretty much everything guitar related is that it's impossible to find actual, real-world tests. In a sane world, there would be some kind of testing rig with a defined control and a frequency graph and audio file of a song played back without a dozen pedals and random amp settings.
But that would show that there's no actual difference between a 5 dollar chink pickup and a 200 dollar SD half the time, and the dads who own cable risers and a 50 year old amp would throw a shit-fit. Plus, the site couldn't take advantage of any lucrative sponsor deals.
