Overrated films thread

Bonus points for stuff that isn't recent.

>i just "watched" 2001 while shitposting on Sup Forums and didn't like it: the thread

youre going to receive a lot of shit OP, but I can understand your opinion. 2001 is one of those films which is fantastic in the cinema but on a television it is completely underwhelming. Without the huge sound and large screen the classical music overplaying space shots feel like filler.

Watched it on 70mm in EYE Amsterdam (Dutch cinema / film museum which also shows Tarkovsky for example) and definitely agree.

I just don't understand what is so appealing about watching apes jump around for 15 minutes. I get the symbolism, but it's boring. Then there's slow-paced exposition with boring dialogue. It takes so long for the plot to arrive and at the end it drops you into a drug scene.

I can understand seeing it 1968 and being awed, but it doesn't hold that appeal almost 50 years later.

Another example of a big screen movie that didn't age well.

Huh? I don't think 2001 hasn't aged at all.

This movie is the BvS of its time. Now we have superheroes, back then they had sci-fi space bullshit. Critics knew it was shit when it came out and everyone was laughing at it like they should. It works as a meme and inside joke now and I love seeing people desperately trying to pretend they liked it or even thinking they actually did.

The opening is laughable.

Nice meme thread

this is the problem of Sup Forums. Conforming dopes pipe up claiming an opinion that doesn't conform is wrong

staypleb OP.

i literally watched it yesterday with a buddy.
i saw it before and its alright, but everything takes ages. symbolism my ass.

also they could have made the huge monolith to have some actual meaning, something to solve the riddle, but they took the easy way out

yes, the EASY WAY OUT. lets just play some dude aging and a baby floating around in space and be done with it.

seriously? just end your life, kubrick

>just end your life, kubrick
17 years late on that buddy

Touch of Evil (1958)

>oh, but Orson Welles! That opening tracking shot!

It's the cinematic equivalent of masturbation. Sure, it gets you off, but still there's something missing. Soul.

Citizen fucking Kane

The most boring as movie i have ever seen, tried to see it 3 times but fell asleep within 20 mins every time. And i love movies from this era, Hitchcock for example is amazing

Goodfellas
Casino
Godfather 1/2
Scarface

Most old classics are overrated, but yeah, 2001 is just the worst.

I'll only agree to Scarface and Goodfellas there. Godfather is a brilliant story and stands test of time.

Casino is literally a work of art

Is there a prize for the most plebeian thread of 2016?
Because you guys have really good chances...

But Casino is basically Goodfellas in Vegas.

>2OO1

what did kubrick meant by this

for you, perhaps.

Agreed (maybe except Godfather).
Most Scorsese movies are overrated as fuck.

I remember watching 2001 I was bored by it as well, but like the other user said I think watching it in theaters provides a better experience.

American History X
Alien
To Kill A Mockingbird (book and film)
The Fifth Element

>goodfellas
dude, goodfellas was one of the best movies i have ever seen i think.

>There Will Be Blood
>2OO1
>Blue Velvet

agree or die

Nothing really stood out to me apart from Hartman.

Ahh I remember why I left. The shit taste

>wheres my downvote button?

>has to bring up reddit like a child
Go back starshit plebber

What a steaming pile of shit.

give an argument why its not overrated then, rather than come in here and say its wrong because it doesn't conform

2OO1 and this. They are just incredibly boring.

Because and believe me I have enough reason to know this, most people didn't even get the last ten minutes alone.

There's nothing wrong with this film, its a marvel, other than user's inability to sit down and watch it without texting because its 'boring' laughing my ass off. If any of you said 2001 was shit to 19/20 directors working today you'd get seriously berated and the other director would cry because you just ruined christopher nolans entire life.

>criticising the people who think its overrated rather than giving a legitimate opinion.
waste of space, mate.

Biggest piece of shit I've seen. I dont know how this movie is relevant.

>people probably didnt get the last ten minutes, which may or may not be important to the experience of the fucking space odyssey
>there's nothing wrong with the film its a marvel, other than user's inability to sit down and watch it without texting because its 'boring

>I can't let you do that, Dave. This is Stanley Kubrick's 2001:A Space Odyssey presented by Metro Goldwyn Meyer.
The most influential film of all time

Lawrence of Arabia

everything cameron touches turn to shit. Titanic is the only good movie he made

Not at all. As opposed to CGI drivel they'd definitely use now, the intro holds up fantastically.

you have the attention span of a gnat

Every movie ever made, probably.

Theres too many people here trying to make an objective consensus on film, that just reeks of desperation. Have your own opinions, dont be a sheep.

this

>Theres too many people here trying to make an objective consensus on film, that just reeks of desperation.
Oh shit nigga you're right idk why I even come back here

Getting bored means not being able to pay attention?

Double negative stupid

ITT: plebs who can't into good cinema

go back to what you do best. baneposting.

The baneposting has been stale for a long time its why everyone calls good things shit nowadays

is that so? I haven't been on here for a while. Sup Forums still has shit taste as ever though.

I hate reddit, faggot. But I hate more people with no attention span, unable to sit down and enjoy 2001 because there are no quips or 'splosions.

This thread is a fucking disgrace.

Granted the shit taste hasnt gone anywhere but its been cancer here for a long time now

You have to be 18 etc etc

no u

depends what bores you, turbo-pleb

I hate to say it, but this is the wrong place if you want discussion on good cinema. Go to /r/truefilm.

if you had the capacity to appreciate those two fantastic films you wouldn't be bored.

nah, those monkey suits are pretty good

Scorcheese is a hack. Instead of writing a great story he always picks shitty narration over nicely arranged scenes (i give him that).

You are right with Scarface. Only the last 30 minutes are O.K.

>space ship looks like a sperm
>space baby at the end
wow so deep kubrick that blows my mind wow so deep

>he thinks this is what its about

Thank god op finally weighed in on his opinion of a movie from 1968. Everyone was dying to know, now we can all sleep soundly with that information in hand. What a relief.

Back To The Future trilogy and The Goonies.

This. On this board lord of the rings and back to the future
