Did Cushing's family get paid at least? Or did they at least get the family's permission to use his likeness? It seems like kind of a hazy legal territory to be able to make an almost-exact reconstruction of somebody and make them do whatever you want.

I wouldn't want somebody to make money by making porn of a virtual me.

Mickey gonna digitally necromance you

friendly reminder even video game star wars looks better than rogue one

it's insane that they didn't
>use other actors
>not include this

Do they think people will be confused when Han Solo isn't harrison ford????

the government already did this with osama

How long until we no longer need live actors and films are made by inputting certain values into a computer and selling whatever comes out?

20 years max

Since CGI is incredibly expensive and requires a lot more skill to make than just filming a person, never.

soon we'll have new audrey hepburn movies and shit
they already did a cgi version of her for that commercial

I'm pretty sure they were cool with it, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to do it,

Wait, those weren't actors on screen?

Cushing was fine.

Leia was voiced by brain dead Carrie Fisher, who sounds exactly like her age so I'm super grateful she only had one line.

Should have used a real actor for Tarkin, Leia and the whole ending sequence should have been scrapped altogether.

>and the whole ending sequence should have been scrapped altogether
kill yourself

Yea just like companies of pirated movies get compensated. After all, it's just a copy.

I want them to remake all Scarlett Johansson movies with prime Marilyn Monroe. I also want Peter O'Toole as The Young Pope and Marlon Brando as Bane.

DICE and Naughty Dog are better at CGI than ILM.

they both looked like shit but tarkin was somewhat bearable.

leia had this obnoxious glow to her and i get what it was for but shit, it looked bad.

>Not even CGI can unJUST Carrie Fisher
Time conquers all.

>Your excellence, what is that?
>A New Hope™ ;) ;) ;)
10/10

i'll remember to do this when i have a petaflop laptop

this looks fucking amazing you guys are just being overly critical

Even as a star wars manchild fan, I would have been much more comfortable with Tarkin being recasted with a lookalike.

Uncanny valley CGI monster was distracting and strange.

They used another actor for tarkin and then CGI'd his face to look like Peter Cushing.

who are you quoting?

Go see the movie.

FUTURE

wouldn't that be more expensive though?

You're assuming the cost is fixed. CGI gets less and less expensive all the time. They already use CGI for sets and extras, it's just a matter of time and technology.

>potato face
>amazing

i'd blame Disney but they've been doing this shit in commercials for a decade or so

>They used another actor for tarkin and then CGI'd his face to look like Peter Cushing.
So could they, in theory, remove the CGI and use the actor's face? in some kind of special edition or whatever?

Nah, you'll probably be making VR porn videos with Ingrid Bergman as slave Leia just for yourself

They would be more expensive at first but then you could start reusing assets.

Because Disney probably let go the best ILM workers or they left already.

She doesn't say "a new hope" though. I know you don't like the movie, but c'mon famalama.

WHY NOT JUST HAVE THEM NOT APPEAR IN THE FILM AT ALL IF THEY'RE GONNA PULL THIS BULLSHIT
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>ingrid bergman
more like The Professional era natalie portman

it's acceptable right up until her eyes open when she turns. WHy is her mouth just hanging open? and why do her eyes look like flat surfaces?

the only thing uncanny in the movie was their mouths

give it 5 years and it will be perfect

Holy shit.
I can't wait for the future

Oh look! Another STEM major who thinks he'll forever have job security.
You'll be replaced by a shit smelling indian within 5 years who will work for pennies.

>bullshots
Nice try EA.

Ah, then you'll have to hand over the directing to Roman Polanski.

>console screenshot

lol

She said "Hope" though, a clear reference to the title of the next chronological grand chapter, I added the several ";)" and the "™" so it would be understood as paraphrasing and not as an exact quote.
I did like the movie by the way, a lot in fact, but that doesn't mean I'm up for defending every stupid decision they made like a dumb fanboy.

Agreed, at that point the entire effect just went right off the rails into the uncanny valley

lol k. now make it mouth words and emote realistically

They did that shit two other times in the movie too. It was a forced theme.

I thought he looked great
It didnt bring me out of the movie at all

they could, but the actor doesn't look like cushing, so there wouldn't be any real point

It's still more expensive and require more skill to create than simply filming a person. The only reason to go with CGI is for the sake of consistency if an actor has passed away or has aged too much. Otheriwise, it's completely pointless.

See, that shot of him looking at the window for the first few seconds worked. Do that for the whole scene and maybe one other scene, cut everything else out because it's pointless, and bam, perfect. Cut out everything involving Leia too, or maybe have just her body and a shot of her hand grabbing the plans.

I wasn't too fond of the CGI, but the animators seemed proud of their work.

>It's still more expensive
It's more expensive right now. As said, they can reuse models, and it's possible that the process can be automated to the point where you could have a single person overseeing the creation of a movie, versus paying a handful of actors and hundreds of people on crew.
It's pointless now, but it won't be in the future.

Should have dyed dude's hair and leave it like that though.
I don't think it would have been much of a shock for everyone already aware of who Tarkin is, after all, they're making a Han Solo movie with a new real actor, right?

Actual decent camrip when? The only one I have seen was recorded with a phone.

i probably would have found a recast just as distracting as the recreation. cushing was one of a kind and his tarkin is iconic to me

why didnt they just cast her daughter?...

This, they should have left it with the half smile before she opens her eyes. Just leave it to the audience that she sees it as hope with that little half smile, like, she wasn't really expecting they'd get this chance, but now she's going to take as much advantage of it as she can.

Everything about the basic structure works, the real issue starts after she opens her eyes. It's not even the eyes themselves but the surrounding facial twitches and expressions that don't look quite right yet.

We've come a long way, one day we'll get it. This isn't actually a bad attempt, but it's not amazing as the one user suggests either. We're just on our way. This is another step on a very long road.

Just pay to go see it. Don't you want Disney to get your money so they can bring us more wonderful Star Wars movies?

Crazy thing is... it's CGI. Leia. Tarkin... All of it... It's all CGI.

This one has significantly more problems. He looks significantly more cartoony, and is far more animated . . . but how he's animated it cartoony. It starts off at its strongest. He never should have turned, just talked while staring off into the distance at the work he is a part of. Contemplative. Like any good illusion, the less you see . . . the better.

Anyone have a webM of the Vader scene?

Cushing's family were directly involved in it all, it's fine

You're probably right.
Guess this way they can improve the "model" and its animation after a few years in some kind of "Remastered Edition" too.

Fuck you guys half-defending this garbage.

The CGI is awful. It's right at the bottom of the uncanny valley. I visibly cringed when I saw this scene.

jesus christ man

with all the criticism the cgi is receiving, i hope they do some more work on it for the home release. but i don't see it happening

It doesn't look half bad in this shitty, grainy, blurry, cam rip.

user, there have been many attempts at this. Many far worse. Some better. None of them spot on yet. That's a long way off. What you want isn't yet possible.

Well, maybe a little possible. I think they should have used Avatar's tech where the alien look was liek CGI make-up over the actor's face and expressions. I think that would have helped a bunch. I think they tried to use a similar method here, but something was off about it. There are places it was better, and places it was worse.

I'm with the guy that says this is an illusion and illusions work best when you see less of them. They could have been more convincing with proper lighting set up and proper positioning to hide the flaws. There are things they could have done here to make it better, but this is far from the bottom of the barrel.

Just look at Tron legacy. It's not even the worst attempt, but you can see how far we've come in comparison. Like I said. Long journey until this is perfected, long long long journey.

>I think they should have used Avatar's tech where the alien look was liek CGI make-up over the actor's face and expressions.
they couldn't do that in this instance because cushing wasn't available on set. since he's dead and all

looks fine till about 0:07 when she raises her eyebrows

Look at Leia's skin and the guy behind her. It's very obvious which one is digital and which one is fake. You can't fool the human eye.

Fair enough, though finding someone with a similar facial structure to map the virtual face over using their expressions isn't out of the question. Actors are meant to act, character actors can, in theory, replicate the nuances of older actors, their quirks, facial ticks and such.

Not saying it'd be easy or ideal, but there are things you can finagle.

Leia was fine. Cushing was too much, way too long of shots on his face making it too obvious. In a way it looks great, it's impressive and all. But it still doesn't look real. Ant Man was more successful with the same trick. Tron was LOLz.

I like it...but her face could be a bit more round. Maybe a bit of a pinkish hue.

>it looks just like that on PC I swear
Proof or gtfo.

Every B is fake

yeah, that might have worked
the scene in ant-man wasn't the "same trick"

whatever close enough

Keeping in mind ant man and, I believe, captain america civil war, did it better because they applied CGI to the actual actors in question. The first captain america did it first with the body, and they've come a long way with the tech. It's certainly the tech at its most impressive. This obviously could have been done with Leia, given the tech and know how, but not the Admiral for rather obvious and sad reasons.

it looks like a halo 5 cut scene

I still say the most glaring issue is in the animations. They should have captured that off of the actual actress and mapped the cgi like a mask over her face. No, the skin isn't perfect, but it's passable in that light if the animations had been there. It's one of the reasons the eyes never should have opened, there's no many subtle movements and twitches and expressions in the eyes that only a real human face can replicate at this point.

I go back to remembering that this is an illusion, and that they needed to treat it as such. Never showing us things full on. Any time her face wasn't centered, anytime here face was away or partially away from the camera were the times it worked best. This can be learned from and built upon to create a better illusion.

you can't capture the motion of one actress' face and then turn that movement into young carrie fisher. one face's movements don't fit another's. it doesn't work that way

See Captain America Civil War and Ant Man,

Now shut the fuck up. You use the actor, then add a CGI mask/touch up over their faces and expressions. Don't say shit ain't possible when shit already be done.

>implying Disney started it

leia looks far better than tarkin
not sure why
both have issues and dont look right
but leias the best out of the two

Genisys didn't either.

what are you talking about? do you even know what was done in those movies? they didn't take the face movements of an unrelated actor and then sync a cgi chris evans or michael douglas "mask" to said movements

Not a movie.

What the fuck do you think I said? Read. Carrie Fisher is not fucking dead. Further more, again, find someone with a similar facial type for Tarkin.

This is not a hard concept to wrap your head around. Stop thinking and absolutes and work with what you have.

the best part is it will be cheaper than hiring real actors in the future goyim

You mean it wasn't raining inside the starship? Isn't that why Leia's wearing a hood?

Oh noo....it looks perfectly normal and real. YES SIR !............normal and real.

Reminds of the Critic, when Duke wanted to change the ends to Hollywood movies he disliked. He actually can now, and the tech will only get better.

Let's be honest though.

Fans would get more autist rafe from a re-cast for major characters rather than a CGI version of them.

I didn't think he was going to turn around but when he did my father went fucking wide-eyed. I think that's what they were going for.

calm down. this isn't an argument

fisher isn't dead, no, but she's also no longer 19. her current face is not a suitable source for animation

if you are then i agreed with your suggestion that they find someone with similar face structure and work with that. see
