It's residual from Break It Billy. They got it right by portraying video games as they are and using gameplay as narrative. Everyone else, this included, just takes a video game plot and squishes it into a two hour movie with none of the charm or gameplay or anything you actually do in the vidya, and even the plot is horribly misrepresented, bearing only the vaguest connections to the source material. Thus, people going because they like the games feel no connection and hate it, and people who have no interest in the IP are indifferent about, no hype is built, and you got yourself another vidya flop.
