So you know how certain music just "sounds" like a place? Like you have an idea of what Chinese music or African music or Russian music stereotypically sounds like?

Well what is quintessential American music or French music or Canadian sound or other countries?

American music = Rap

trap beats

American's contribution to the music landscape is jazz.

Does it sound quintessentially "American"? I like jazz but I don't immediately think "this is the sound of America" I'd probably imagine some country shit or military march or something.
Lel

Listen to something like Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. A lot of older jazz compositions from before the free jazz era sound pretty distinctly American to me.

>stereotypically
stereotypical means remote from reality

Yeah actually I see what you're saying it conjures up that kind of early 20th century Americana feel for sure.

As a non murican, the only music that makes me think of the usa in a similar way to what you described is american primitivism.

>French music
Gentle accordions.

probably just that you associate the music with things, not that the music sounds like the place, though the idea of a place having a sound is very romantic and hopefully true

no it doesn't

I would say some classic Rock n Roll like Elvis or someting

This, rock and roll is what I think of, even though the first bands that come to mind (AC/DC, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin) aren't even american

perhaps only when you talk about your reality, which is stereotypical per se

I decided a long time ago the best representative of black american music is miles davis. And the best representative of white american music is johnny cash

For Canada, I would definitely say Rush. French is accordions and calypso's (I think that's the right instrument I'm thinking of)

The Beach Boys have always and will always sound like California. Hendrix sounds like Seattle. Dylan sounds like a Minnesota boy aping southern blues and country. Woody Guthrie sounds like Oklahoma.

tfw you will never be this high.

America is Rock and Roll, Rap, or Jazz
Canada is shit, more cows than people.

don’t ruin my dreams user

>rock and roll
maybe could also be brits

johnny was great because he represented southern white americas contradiction of being highly patriotic but also rebellious

If people are going to be regional about it the beach boys for the west coast, the velvet undergound for the east coast. johnny cash for the south.

I'd say Glen Campbell sounds more like the stereotypical south.

America sounds like Bruce Springsteen

First of all, your understanding of commas is abysmal and Calypso in a musical context is a genre, not an instrument.

jazz
marching band songs like stars and stripes forever
redneck music
hip hop and its derivatives

not an american but if i were to hear any of those there's no other country i would think of
