Why was Miles Davis crazy?

Why was Miles Davis crazy?

Jealousy perhaps?

Heroin

he spent his entire life screeching into a horn

I don't want to diss Hancock, but come on, Davis was better in almost every way.

Whitey

Doubtful.

Was it that hairline?

had to watch lesser bands & groups like Buddy Holly & The Crickets, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Temptations, Bob Dylan, insert sunshine pop acts here, etc. get the fame with not even half of the talent & work that he had in.

it was this
plus blacks were treated like shit by everyone in those days

White people

No.

Miles might be lauded as one of the greats, but once you actually study the jazz theory you know how little he actually contributed as opposed to someone like Coltrane

Miles was a better bandleader and perhaps a more interesting person. thats about it

what are you talking about? miles was massively successful compared to a lot of equally or more talented jazz musicians at that time

he was a crazy asshole. anyone who admires him as a musician looked past it as just another trait of a genius, but the guy was truly an asshole

Miles reportedly was unhappy about the album's original cover, which featured a photograph of a young white woman and child aboard a sailboat. He made his displeasure known to Columbia executive George Avakian, asking, "Why'd you put that white bitch on there?" Avakian later stated that the question was made in jest. For later releases of the record, however, the original cover-photo has been substituted by a photograph of Miles Davis.

Why are people in this thread pretending that this rivalry/comparison dynamic exists between them

Hancock's best work was the albums he did in Miles's Davis band with Tony Williams

but instrumental jazz musicians don't have mainstream appeal

he should've collabed with the pop musicians he praised (sly stone, prince) if he wanted some shine

>Davis had an operation to remove polyps from his larynx in October 1955. The doctors instructed him not to speak at all for a period of ten days in order to recover and rest his voice. Instead he got into an argument with a member of his band and raised his voice , damaging his vocal cords.

yes he was

fucking retarded moolie

Why do you think he was crazy? A lot of people accuse him of being racist and a bad person, but if you watch any of his interviews there really isn't anything to justify that view.

This is correct. We don't talk about him in Jazz school but we sure as hell talk about everyone who has ever played with him. He was a coach. He was also a rich kid so he was pretty much putting on an agnsty act. There is a thing with Jazz musicians. The ones who are the shittiest have the biggest attitudes to compensate. This way you can blame the conditions for why you are stinking it up. The only person with an attitude was Jaco and he was the best.

he's just an angry fucking guy in general

>Miles Davis apparently had numerous illnesses in his lifetime, including sickle cell anemia, diabetes, respiratory problems related to his smoking, and drug abuse.

>He ruptured his vocal cords in 1956 after yelling too soon after an operation to remove polyps in his throat and he was in a serious car accident in 1972 that broke both his legs in multiple place

I don't really blame him for being pissy.

Underrated

>Jazz school
kek

welcome to current day where your parents spend 100k so you can explore your hobby for 4 years in a sterile enviroment before accepting your fate of working some shit job.

At least you're good at playing

nah, it was Cocaine. A lot of it.

He was looking to collaborate with Hendrix and McCartney not long before Hendrix died.

Im medicore, bitter and lack the people skills necessary to suceed in music, but thanks user.

>he was the best
he could play very fast, that's about it. His playing is not very musical nor is it tasteful

Jaco wasnt known for playing fast. He had great time and a unique tone. He also wrote a few good tunes. Everyone who knows how to play acknowledges him. You must be a listener/poser or a guitar player. Jaco was nothing short of fanastic and extremely musical.

he was good when he could play solo and only then. Then again electric bass is a very limited instrument for that. He can do "fretless" "distorted fretless" and that's it. No variation in tone, stupid timing like a robot and an overall asshole attitude ("oh, he plays a solo, lets destroy that with MUH TRADEMARK FLAGEOLET IN 120 DB)

>You must be a listener/poser or a guitar player
oh lord.

>Bill Evans, who was instrumental in creating Kind of Blue, said: "I would like to hear more of the consummate melodic master, but I feel that big business and his record company have had a corrupting influence on his material. The rock and pop thing certainly draws a wider audience. It happens more and more these days that unqualified people with executive positions try to tell musicians what is good and what is bad music."
Was Evans right?

>Hancock's best work was the albums he did in Miles's Davis band with Tony Williams
You might as well say Bill Evans' best work was Kind of Blue and couple other sessions with Davis

read his autobiography.
