katheryn bigelow saw my shitty vid and then made zero dark thirty

Freshman at Fitchburg State's Film program here. Working on my first one. It's a timelapse made with a Nikon D750.

Fitchburg is a shithole.

Indeed, but the school gets a fuckload of state funding so we mostly all hang out there or go on camping trips to vermont.

Toured the school when I was applying, but realized if I went into film I'd have to live out of my car and there just isn't enough room in there.

But since you're going for it, you picked a pretty decent place. I have some friends who are sophomores there and at least one is a film major. Good luck.

Freshman at UT Austin Film School. Currently casting my piece of life war movie

yes i have an imbd directorial credit.

ive done a flick

just a few concept shorts that i can eventually use for feature lengths
youtube.com/watch?v=cSWw5_uZvCc

just finished filming my thesis about a restaurant
time to screenwrite till my head falls off

Has Sup Forums as a board ever made a film? Sup Forums makes albums all the time.

I got halfway through a film based on Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" for a contest in high school, but then my lead actress fainted from the heat and fell 15 feet down the mountain where we were filming so my mom made me go home.

I made a short film for my university course. Had no budget so went 80's style.

Holy shit, Jeremy?

Yep.

I had that same airsoft gun as the leading guy when I was a kid

youtu.be/TZsMVxic3TQ

Do candid feet shots of girls on the bus count?

Michael?

No but i'm a non union set dresser/prop master and I've worked on over a dozen.

Any big movies? Or just indie stuff?

Yeah I've done a couple of shorts but I will never share them with Sup Forums

When I was a kid we made a film called "Kill Woods" it was supposed to be a parody of Kill Bill where we hunt down and kill Tiger Woods with a golf club

made an ad for a start up I worked in.

does that count?

I want to make a Dogme 95 style farce about a group of student actitvists. I need to write the script, get a handheld camera, and sound equipment and shit.

youtu.be/SZN7MLgSL78

I'm the fat one. I later died of heart disease.

That sounds like a pretty fun little film

Tunnel shot was kino

I'd watch the fuck out of that user

Currently producing a short film about what it's like to go through Benzo Withdrawa. I've gone full Hideki Anno using my work as therapy.

It's pretty obnoxious.

I wanna see

also hell yea barlowe is the tits

Thanks, I'll make a thread about it once it's finished. Using timelapse photography and a stop motion puppet/ clips from drug commercials. It's gonna be sweet. And yeah Barlowe's Inferno work is a huge inspiration.

i directed a small film you might of heard called primer

:)

Not yet, but I have several ideas of things that I can realistically film once I learn to use a camera and all that shit. I also need to finish the scripts.

Yup, was even Kickstarted by Sup Forums

Fitchburg senior here. Do you have a class with Bob? Listen to that man, besides being an SJW he's the only one with a spine to give critiques and the only one who will encourage you to make weird stuff.

Call the shots always, your peers are likely sheep and will do whatever you tell them if you come prepared and give a damn. Don't do what I did and wait for people to come to you, they won't.

Wow, good to know. Bob Harris? Yeah I have a class with him he's a pretty cool guy.

I was the set designer for a couple of motion pictures. I'm not saying which though.

ok, kill yourselves

"If you do acid, dont stare up at the sun. Don't ask me how I know that." Bob is based. I've heard he's slept with some of the hot graduate girls, but you didn't hear it from me.

Here's some of the other teachers to be aware of:

Charlie is the editor, if you have an interest in editing he won't teach you any style and you'll likely feel overwhelmed in that class. But he's the most strict and will honestly give you an idea of what it's like out there. I take his opinions with a grain of salt.

Kevin is the sound guy. He's a little too nice, but good in his department.

Zach is the lighting guy, everyone loves him because he's cool, but you won't get much from him unless you pry.

I suggest taking Peter Laytons photo class if you can sneak in an elective. I learned more about cameras in that one class than any of my film classes.

The pre prod class sucks so much. If you have an inkling of what you want to do with your films, the class is patronizing at best.

No, but we wrote one. It's called Meme Lover. You should check it out.

in 2013 i wrote and directed a short film for my last year of (((film school))) since then I have worked as a 1st, 2nd and 3rd AD in the local film industry on shorts and both independent and professional features, whilst writing other shorts and features that I'm basically just sitting on, I did direct one short this year that is still in editing, next year I will be producing a series 4+ shorts including potentially a few of my own

>tfw there's some other poor dreg stuck in fucking Fitchburg but bearing it because they have a decent film school
thanks user, makes this place feel a little better knowing there's some other user shitposting on Sup Forums with me

that awp sound effect

pretty fucking good aesthetic bro

the bane porno was written using suggestions from Sup Forums, even for specific dialogue.

>make dick around movies with your friends all the time
>even make a couple for high school classes that everyone thought was hilarious
>pal hits you up and says he has a script he wants you to look at
>it's fanfic horror but it's not like you have any other offers
>don't recognize the references at the time but trust him when he says it'll all make sense
>make it
>negative budget
>over a month of filming
>no costume
>no makeup
>no set
>props consisted of leftover childhood toys
>shot on a phone
>nonexistant lighting and sound
>effects were all done on a free editing program
>he thinks it's fucking brilliant
>everyone else is kind enough to remain silent
>I ask him to take my name off the credits and never show it to anyone

That was the last time I did a movie.

BANE?

Indies. Really really dumb el cheapo "family films...with a message!" level shit. Straight to video/VOD/Cable.

If a big Hollywood feature comes through town it's generally a union show, and I can only hope to be brought on as an lowly assistant.

Why does everyone want to make horror?

filmmaking requires IRL interaction unlike making albums or cartoons

It's an easy genre to find an audience for, especially when you're making something indie with no money and no recognizable actors.

Because it takes no money and no talent. It's the Youporn of film.

easy to make and has an audience

I made Aimy in a Cage. I put my life savings into it and then my distributors scammed me. Now im broke and can only hope one day its discovered. The sad reality of film is that this is very common. What really pissed me off though is how the media and festivals wouldnt give us any coverage no matter what. even PR wouldnt take me unless i got in a top five festival. and the fests woildnt unless we had PR. i have really come to see the critics media and journalists as the colluding bunch they are. sellouts and opportunists. But with that said i dont regret it and i think the film will one day be discovered. like koreans and indians love it for some reason. in 20-30 yrs who knows

maybe cause your movie looks like a piece of crap

youtube.com/watch?v=_Zo6NKQ3gEg

that movie looked really good. I just didn't know where to find it and sort of forgot about it. distributors suck though I agree. I was expected to do all the marketing for my first movie myself and after three years I've made about $50

these two...ive given up

vimeo.com/14229671

I would like to see this movie user

nice try hooroo

Shane?

I made a few flicks of me jacking off yes

No, but I was the monster in my cousin's movie that he made his senior year in art school.

Here's my epic

youtube.com/watch?v=6aCtgkWR01Q

well some chinese dude pirated it on youtube lol

it deserved a better shake thats for sure but i got scammed and didnt have any money to market it. I did get a holywood connection out of it but it fell off after they gave my script to a hack writer and i fought back. if you dont do thr director by committee thing they will fuck you so hard.

those look like potatoes. what are they irl?

I don't like piracy, I'm also a filmmaker haha

I saw some good pushes for it on indie horror sites but not enough info about the distro itself. hopefully you get another shot, your movie looked really cool

thank you!! I had a shot i do still wonder if I should have just kissed ass harder and let them hack the script but they also deceive you with friendlibess. one day 'you are so amazing were gonna take the world by storm' the next day 'you disagreed with me youre dead to me'

clay

yeah, we're getting our first >100K feature off the ground right now and I'm interested to see how it goes. trying my best not to get too screwed haha

You met Crispin fucking Glover?
Your film actually looks like good fun.

your music video is fucking amazing, tell me are they life size puppets or are all your props models?

Yeah, like three or four in high school, worked on a ton of others.
None of mine were very good though. We wrapped filming for a great one and then my friend was supposed to edit it and then never did...

A documentary for my senior project. It came out fine. I didn't edit it my friend did it, honestly can't complain.

I've worked on several big studio features including spending over a year on Ghostbusters

I am so sorry user

hey thanks man, i appreciate that

the puppets are from this place - puppetville.com/ lol, bought a 3 pack of police officers and the woman separate

oh right meant to say not life size, 28 inches

meh, it was actually one of the most fun and well-run sets I've ever been on, and Chris Hemsworth was a total bro to just fuck around with. Post was a clusterfuck though.

>these two...ive given up
user do not give up, these are great!

>vimeo.com/14229671
Pretty good but the colors in Billy's Birthday are atrocious.

it was shot on a camera with a broken knee (no variation is blacks, anything dark or on the verge of black are pure black), i agree it looks awful

We're all gonna make it, this contrarian Mongolian Zoetrope forum has to have its benefits in the end. Its always kept me skeptical of normies. When I was making my intermediate film I tried my best not to cave in to other people's desires. If you write a script and people agree on it, just assume you have the first and last decision.

Lads, is it worth my time and money going to a film school (any, not yours specifically)?

I'm 30+ burned out self-taught still photographer, I had a dream and ambition of getting into movies at least since viable video came to DSLRs, but the logistics and scope of any video project always overwhelm me, especially the part where you need to get other people to work with you, both crew and actors.

I'm sure a film school would provide an environment where you can do that safely, but at the same time I worry if I can afford it both time and money wise if in the end it's gonna be nothing but stroking my fancy for it.

heres my perspective on this. Film school teaches you to create independent films. Small scale. They don't teach you AT ALL how the actual film industry works. I went to film school and I now work int he film industry. The best things I got out of film school were the projects that it helped me create that I could use to show people my work, and my friends/connections. You do NOT need ANY sort of schooling to actually work in the film industry. The actual film industry is heavily departmentalized, which means unless its a low budget or indie, you aren't gonne be the guy helping light the set, the running over to camera to check frame, then chatting with the actors for a bit. You'll be doing your ONE job and you better be doing it well or they'll find someone who can. Also be prepared to work minimum 14-16 hours a day.

Does anyone know how WKU's film program is? Only thing I know is they apparently have good equipment and a set.

Thanks, this kinda confirms my suspicions. So it's basically pay for access to equipment and crew/actors to do your indie shit portfolio and hope that it's good enough to get your started in the real industry?

Not that i mind doing indie shit as long as it puts decent money on the table, but then i doubt it really does.

Go to a film school that's known for getting their students internships, and work your ass off to get the best possible one you can.

Internships = post-grad jobs

I'm in the shithole called SF Bay Area, any school recs around here?

Nice, RTF major. If you want to unmask the beast, start writing scripts about redpilled topics like 9/11.

See how the public university reacts.

Kino.

If I had a choice I would have majored into something else and done film on the side. But that's me.

You would be working with people a lot younger than you, which would be so frustrating imo. However you have life experience over them, so there's that..

You could always try a semester and if it seems like a waste of time just drop out. It's sad to me, because I think film school would be a lot more effective if you had actual directors come in and basically use all the students to build a film from the ground up. Whether the film sucks or not adds to the learning lesson between the teacher and the student.

The reality is that film school involves not a lot of filmmaking and a lot more theory. The filmmaking, if any, happens behind the scenes, and often kids have unprofessional priorities. Sure you can network through internships. But I've found my most rewarding work was with friends on work we slapped together in a day.

It's a tough call, it really depends on your drive. I say go in with a huge detailed plan of every line, shot, and look of your film you want to make, approach some kids who'd like to work and go. If you find it enjoyable, like really really intoxicating. You'll find your place.

I'd say save up for a film rather than a school. But again, that's just me.

>I'd say save up for a film rather than a school. But again, that's just me.

b-but how do you make a film user? it's so overwhelming

Well obviously you have to write a script first. Or just forget the script and start with a storyboard. Have films in the background while you write or draw out ideas. You'll be stealing from your favorite directors, the key is to steal in your own style.

I taught myself how to screenwrite. The format is so easy, they have programs dedicated to it. You're literally writing what you see and hear too, so it's not like you have to go into deep prose. 1 page is roughly 1 minute. More white on the page the better, unless your film is shot heavy and not dialog heavy. (If shot heavy, stick to story boarding. Much easier to draw shots than describe them.)

If that doesn't feel liberating, then find a writer. You said you work with cameras right? You have that under your belt. Filmmaking is simple 1/50 shutter speed, 24fps. Hit record. Then edit that mess and figure out what you did wrong. Congrats you're a filmmaker.

Figure out the rules. Work with them. Then break the fuck out of them.

Thanks user, I appreciate that a lot. For me the toughest part will be getting people on the project, I suck at networking, and while you can get away with no crew for a while, then bit so much without actors. I have the technical side of the camera down pretty well, same with footage handling, I just could use more practice in lighting because for my still stuff i almost always shoot with natural light.

What's a good place to find people to appear in your shit and not ask for more than gas and lunch money? CL?

If Sup Forums made a film it would probably be something dumb like the nostalgia cuck's kickassia or RLM's Space Cop.

No, but /lit/ wrote a book and Sup Forums has made multiple games

Sup Forums still can't recover from the ptsd it got from watching the SWAP.AVI that its predecessor made.

Heh. It's so obvious what the punchline is going to be. But somehow its still hilarious.

Well technically not. Because non were shot on film. But yes.
