What's the point of this movie and why did Sup Forums recommend it for me? Literally the most useless shit I ever watched.

>pretend to enjoy it so plebs won't call you a even worse type of pleb

>You don't get it
yeah dude scum of the earth, must cleanse da streets ma man, what the hell shit dude xD

>mfw this movie was nearing it's end

Same
When I read what critics wrote about it, I just realized it's just some bandwagonning

"Now regarded as a cinematic classic, I have to admit that Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" was always a film that left me as isolated as it's lead character. The first time I saw it, I thought it vastly overrated. Admittedly, I was in my teens at this point and never managed to fully grasp"

>le autistic war-torn crusader

boring.

why the fuck did he take that girl to a porno film anyway?

That's why it's a masterpiece, it challenged your thinking

seriously though, why the fuck did he shave his hair like that? He became nothing more than the degenerates he was trying to "wage war" on

>He became nothing more than the degenerates he was trying to "wage war" on

How fucking dumb are you

That's literally the point of the film, he projects his weaknesses and insecurities on the world around and people around him.

he didn't "become" anything, he was already one of them

fucking retard

Travis was a man who stood up.

well at least it's quotable

>you talking to me?

but I genuinely had that the script was unfinished but they filmed it anyways

>he projects his weaknesses and insecurities on the world around and people around him.

>The world and people around him

So again, what's the point of this movie?
>LIFE SUCKS AND I'LL MAKE A SHITTY 120 MINUTES MOVIE TO LET YOU KNOW

The movie had no purpose, it was dull as fuck with the slow narration and slow moving plot.

At one point he's into a girl that's campaigning for some guy, tries to get her to pornos because autism and he doesn't know better, a shithead, then when she leaves him, he decides to change, starts to watch and follow said guy, talks to the secret service with a smug smile on his face, proceeds to run away, later in the film, he tries to assassinate the candidate but fails at the one thing he's planning to do???

Like seriously, why the fuck is whatever happened in this movie happened?

*had the impression that

Take a close look at what Travis eats. Fritos, coke, chuckles, and candy bars.

I honestly don't know if Sup Forums is sarcastic anymore or not

Someone come in to defend this.

I've seen it in lists of user's favorite movies here.

There's nothing to defend, the movie was a plebfest trash

>all these non patrician shitters not being able to enjoy a classic like this
you are the lowest of the low. The plebbest of the pleb. You're shit taste made it impossible for you to enjoy or understand an actually competent movie and now you're just calling it shit even though the problem lies with you. I can't believe this is what tv has become. Stop watching patrician movies, they will only hurt your brain plebs.
T. Patrician

I thought this movie was a classic too.
Then I stopped being under the age of 25.

Can confirm this movie sucked

Average Joe who has been to Vietnam. His life is empty. It sucks. He is stupid. That's whta the movie is basically about. Are telling us you can't relate to his thinkig and activities? That speaks to me I can tell.

>T. Patrician

Yeah, no

Good job not even saying what movie you are talking about. Well done OP. Get back on the fucking shortbus.

Hi Alex Jones

Samefag pleb desperately spamming his stupid thread

I don't know why I couldn't relate to that shithead. It seemed way too much. His little love story didn't make sense, the consequences and what follows also wouldn't happen anywhere irl.

I think the only moment I liked this movie was at the end, just the end, when the police and everyone that got in there just got in there once someone did something even though they should've stepped in a long time ago. But that was about it, I'd say 70% of this movie was a total waste of time and focus.

it's okay you just have shit taste

he goes from socially gifted to inept and dumb real quick. It was weird.

Autism the movie

>thinks retarded movie is good
>call other plebs

It's a movie that addresses the aimlessness and isolation of early adulthood.

Travis is a vietnam vet who is kinda fucked up and maladjusted for society. He's spinning his wheels and feels increasingly lonely and desperate because he wants to do something but doesn't actually put in the effort to change himself. He's a walking contradiction that's angry at himself but projects his anger at the outside world. He doesn't know what he wants to do, but he wants to do *something*.

The movie is a look into his life as he slowly descends into madness, particularly because he has no mentor or anchor to reality to bring him back. He gets caught up in his own delusions and does something extremely dangerous and just happens to get away with it because he killed people nobody liked.

At the end of the day, he didn't learn anything or improve on anything. He maybe saved a kid's life. But he goes back to being a taxi driver and we can see how the process is slowly starting to repeat itself. The movie is basically a cry for help for young men, with Scorsese trying to say that "you're not alone in this world, other guys have been where you are, and they're going through the same things you are. Don't do something stupid and dangerous"

You're either trolling or you're stupid

>why did someone recommend me this classic movie, it's the worst thing I ever sawed. AUTISM YOLO

This site is for 18+, take your edgy comments to the school lunch break.

>What's the point of this movie

what's the point of any movie?

this

>The movie is a look into his life as he slowly descends into madness,

but he actually looked sane, apart from wanting to kill a president candidate for no fucking reason
he started working out, took care of nutrition, stopped a robbery, tried to help a child prostitute
he didn't seem mad, just eccentric from time to time.

Crap/10

It's supposed to be art and to be enjoyed and maybe get a few ideas and new concepts from? You tell me, user

I liked most of the movies I got to watch thanks to Sup Forums, including old classics, but this one in particular was such a let down after reading all the praise anons gave it. It was really bad.

Thanks for that user, that'll make me reassess my look on that movie for sure. Very convincing explanation. My problem with it is how it progressed, it felt random at some points and not tied to reality at all. Everything seemed going so well for him, he got the girl of his dreams interested in him, he invited her to a movie and what does he do? Take her to a porno and then 5 minutes later complains how she's got no emotions and how she's just like "the rest of them". But I guess the contradiction comment on him just unfucks that mess of a script.

To add to this, a couple of moments off the top my head that ilustrate the fact that Travis not only feels alone and outcast, he himself pushes others away: he is seen with his fellow cab driver partners, but he never seems to fit, to have any degree of closeness to them. In the final moments of the film it appears than he is getting along with them better, and this suggests the climax of the film has changed him for the better, but afterwards he drives Grace home and essentially rejects her, rejecting a chance at companionship and a normal relationship, which indicates that he, in fact, didn't change or learn anything from the experience.

From my perspetive, the scene where he takes her to a porno shows how little grasp he has on common sense and what is socially acceptable and polite, being as isolated as he is. When she gets predictably offended and storms off and he complains about her, well that's just textbook lashing out and lack of self-awareness.

This is why I think this movie is very important for young guys to watch and understand.

>but he actually looked sane, apart from wanting to kill a president candidate for no fucking reason
Did you actually follow what the presidential candidate's platform was? He wanted to give handouts to the poor, while Travis was all about purging the streets of degenerates. Earlier on in the movie he supported the candidate because he had the hots for a girl that was working in his campaign office.

He liked the girl because he thought she was special and unique just like him, but when he started talking to her it became obvious he had no idea how to interact with her. She lists her tastes in music that Travis has no idea about. On their next date, he fucking buys her a record of a song she says she liked. He doesn't even listen to it and just gives it to her. All to impress her, but being completely oblivious to the fact that he's ignorant of who or what she really is.

>he started working out, took care of nutrition,
rewatch those scenes again.

He starts working out in earnest and eating right, and stops taking his pills.
But very soon he returns to his old routine of eating milk with bread and sugar and instead of taking his pills normally he starts gobbling handfuls of them.

His workout routine starts normal, but it gets more insane later on. He goes from doing normal pushups to putting his fist on his gas burner and talking to himself in the mirror as he arms himself to the teeth for his final confrontation.

>tried to help a child prostitute
The only reason he helped the child prostitute was because he ultimately failed in his mission to assassinate the presidential candidate. He basically lashed out and wanted to prove something to the world.

Hmm... well you explained that very well, I have just one more questions about this movie: the attempt to assassinate the candidate, what happened there?

I understood most of the movie, but that still doesn't make sense... is it a statement about politicians or is it just his drive to make change but not being able to do it? And why wasn't he successful if he trained and followed him for months?

My question is like, what's the point of that happening? His failure? Not why he failed, he's obviously a lost cause, but why did the producer have this happen? What was the meaning behind him failing other than the obvious?

he send the child money before the assassination attempt

When did this site become so contrarian? It seems like no matter what board you go to there are faggots who hate things because they're popular. Sure it's not the greatest movie ever but it's not terrible. God damn.

jesus christ no one please ever watch the social network it was absolute dogshit. ah zuckerberg was just a dork who made facebook from his dorm and hes autistic and betrayed a bunch of people with his superior intellect. i need to know how facebook was made i really do its important. wow a combination of film (art) and history. maybe ill be like zuckerberg its just that easy. hes a dork just like me too *randomly throws beer at you*

>is it a statement about politicians or is it just his drive to make change but not being able to do it? And why wasn't he successful if he trained and followed him for months?

Because, again, he's spinning his wheels in place. He wants to make a change but doesn't go through with it. His training starts off well but turns very poorly and he returns to his old habits and starts doing insane shit.

He picked up the presidential candidate one night in his cab and saw what kind of a piece of shit politician he was. He was completely at odds with what Travis thought the problem in New York was. He supported him because he liked the girl working for his presidential campaign, but was at odds with his philosophy. Again, part of the contradictory character of Travis.

Keep in mind that the dude wants to fucking purge the streets of filth but the only kind of movies he watches are porn flicks.

He doesn't want happiness. He only wanted to reinforce his own biased view on the world. If she likes the movie and continues to date him, she's no longer pure. If doesn't like the movie and rejects him, he only starts to hate the world more.

First as mentioned the politician and Travis are not really in agreement. The people the candidate calls poor Travis refers to as the scum of the earth so I think this is what he tells himself is the reason to do this. But I think it has little to do with that and more to do with the fact that he wants to be remembered, no matter the reason (the lack of reason is emphasized by his narration before the scene, where he says HERE LIES... meaning he doesn't even know what or who he wants to be and be remembered as). Public assassination is a relatively easy way to have people talking about you and remembering you I guess.

Lastly, you asked about his failure. I'dd chalk that up to him creeping the fuck out of the security chief responsable for the protection of the politician. After having that weird ass talk with a creepy man in a baggy bomber jacket and then seeing him days later bolt for your VIP in a haircut originating in showing your lack of fear of death (look it up, that's why he did the mohawk, in 'nam soldiers did that), I think I would try to stop him as well.
I might be misremembering exactly how that scene went down, having not seen the movie in a while, so correct me if I fucked up here.

He sends her money and leaves her on her way but she goes back to her pimp. He half-assed it, like everything else.

He thought he was going to die in his assassination attempt and leaves it at that, but once he fails he goes right for the pimp to kill him as an act of lashing out.

The child prostitue is about the only person that he actually ends up helping, and it's more of a coincidental thing because he compromised his original goals. That's what makes it an interesting part of his character: he's done a morally right thing in the eyes of society (which excused him from a prison sentence) but from his own individual perspective he hasn't grown at all. That's why his character is in the exact same place where the movie starts in the end where the credits roll.

>saw what kind of a piece of shit politician he was
Hmm, I didn't see how that happened in the cab? I thought the politician disliked Travis's opinions but the candidate didn't really express any anger or disagreement. If you mean later when he started watching him on TV and going to his rallies, that brings me to another point, the presence of his girl throughout the movie, does it symbolize anything or is it just there for convenience?

No no, you got it right. But what I want to understand is the reason the script is written in a way to orchestrate his failure.. is it to remind us that he's just a fuck up like a lot of people are? It just gives me this weird and unsatisfying realization of the fault of our lives... like how we live and do degenerate things but end up condemning others for doing it on a different level. So, in short, what does his failure represent other than he's one huge mess? or is that it?

But Betsy is a shallow whore who only went out with him to be nice, and wanted to be with him again later because of his stunt.

This is my favorite movie, mostly because Travis reminds me a lot of myself. I first saw it when i was 15 and didnt care for it either but after rewatching it numerous times, it's pretty good.

>This is my favorite movie, mostly because Travis reminds me a lot of myself.
It shows.

I think she was genuinely into him desu, she realized he was an ignorant when he gave her the record but she still gave him a chance to take her to a good movie. He's just dumb m8

stop talking shit about one of my favorite movies

I mean, the movie is a character study, and a damn well-executed one at that. If you are looking for a message to get out of it, I would say that it is implied that war messed with him and that society at the time ignored these people who clearly did not return well and needed help. Keep in mind only recently did society as a whole gave a fuck about mental health or even acknowledge it.

>shallow
I don't see how she dating him out of pitty would be shallow. She didn't seem at all interested in his looks (big surprise) or evetual wealth. You can call her a phony or condescending for going out with him out of pity but shallow? Even if she were shallow, that hardly makes Travis' behavior appropriate, given that he prior the porn incident thought she was misunderstood and a special snowflake like him, so there is no reason to think Travis' attitude is out of spite to get back at her for shallowness.

Is there some significance to the "WE are the people" and "We ARE the people" scene?

Yeah im a loser friendless outcast who got burnt bad by a literal bulldyke
Became obsessed and seriously considered some bad stufff until i was basically forced to come to my senses
But im improving a lot, mind you and maybe Ill...become my own person

It's Sup Forums, better come hopeless

She is shallow for wanting him after his insane suicidal act that was deemed heroic.
Yeah, fuck her Travis.

Don't feel like posting this in a new thread

what does any of the posters here think of "The place beyond the pines"

The Goose was good in it.

R u a grill? If so LONDON

Well from how the movie portrays the media's coverage of his insane shooting, I don't think it's a stretch to assume she just thought he stood up for a girl in need and found that commendable and a sign of a good man, maybe even a sign that he changed since they previously met. I feel like you might be judging her too harshly, although I get that the movie doesn't contradict your judgment of her in any way

Which do you think is better, that or The Hunt?

Pines is better for a head, but Jagten is the Citizen Kane of ragecore, so it's a more memorable film.

Thanks, guess I'll save it to when I have a gf to watch with

t. capeshitters

It's a film about isolation and loneliness. If you think it's boring that's fine but you would have to be fucking retarded to miss the point of it.

Well, that covers everything about it...
I saved what you anons wrote for the future to remind myself of it, thanks for clearing this up for me, i'll give it another watch whenever it's holidays again

I actually really enjoyed, thought it might be one of those """classics""" but i was surprised

Pointless movie

Hello normie

Hey no problem man. I can't even take full credit for thinking this stuff up man, Channel Criswell did a wonderful analysis of Taxi Driver I highly recommend you watch. If not now, then when you rewatch the film itself. Cheers

i liked it

> one of those """classics"""
What did he mean by this?

Scorsese was really into what happens when you force a killing machine back into civilian life, that particular scene in Mean Streets when a drunk veteran tries to rape a girl because he thought it was Saigon comes to mind, what Taxi Driver does is taking it one step further, showing the futility of wanting to make a difference to the point where it messes up your values and makes you as eager to commit magnicide as killing some people that you consider scum and rescuing someone, it was an internal narrative taken to a logical extreme, to the point where it crashes with reality, powerful stuff and it's no wonder the Reagan shooting was inspired by it.

The Reddit invasion is real.

>Autism

Exactly. This movie is about a total autistic who triumphs because of he's autism.

He know jack shit about movies, politics, or even socializing as a human being, yet he gets the idea to clean the town of scum. And in the end, the papers pronounce him a hero. An autistic hero. A triumph of autism. Sup Forums should appreciate.

*his

For at least 5 good years

A person should be glad if they don't understand Taxi Driver.

Go read on something called urbanism you retarded fuck

what a shit thread, respect to the brave few who stood up to all this plebbitry

Exactly.

But what if someone is too autistic to understand it?
