Even though House calls him a "little boy," the book speculates that he would have been about 19 or 20 at this time. At some point, he decided he didn't want to put up with all the scolding and ribbing and wandered off somewhere else for about a year, where he presumably was practicing like crazy. So when he showed back up all the older musicians were floored by his improved abilities that seemed to come from nowhere. The whole thing about Robert Johnson selling his soul wasn't really a concept he promoted. That was Tommy Johnson's schtick.
