Why does Guatemala have such a high population compared to its neighbors? Guatemala has 16 million people while Honduras has 8 million, El Salvador has 6 million and Belize has just 400 thousand people.

Guatemala has had civilisation since Mayan times. That's a long time to reproduce. Almost 3000 years of continuous civilisation. Most other countries in the Americas haven't had that.
Itd be huge. I am sure at least half of the population that speaks Spanish lives in the Southwest. Thatd be like 15-20 million more Spanish speakers at least (my guess).
