Color Grading

Here's a shot from TFA before color grading.
Here's (almost) the same shot after. (see next post).

Why would JJ bother to shoot on film if he's going to color grade it so heavily that it looks flat like Digital?

This is after color grading.
Now which one looks better to you?

You don't need to convince me that JJ is a hack, that's been obvious for years

I'm fairly sure the first one has grading as well, its just graded differently.

You could be right, I assumed it was a before and after, but who knows.

kek op has no idea what color grading is

Lmao op the first pic is a color graded second pic which is also color graded.

The color palette in TFA was fine.

why is it not the same image?

Mike please.

In this frame she is clearly taking off (hence all the lifted dust) while she is just in place in the first frame.

OP you dun goofed

Too difficult to tell. In the first shot, Rey and the speeder are sitting flat on the ground and in the second shot, the speeder is in motion and is kicking up sand everywhere.

>Why would JJ bother to shoot on film if he's going to color grade it so heavily that it looks flat like Digital?

It doesn't look digital. It looks shot on film and color grades.

Go back to /r/movies and bullshit some more about Nolan's "cinematography" you tryhard.

I think the first one is a production still and the second one a screen capture tbqhwyfamalam

here you go

kill yourself

This is not color grading you ignorant cunt.

They added in the lifted sand because of the speeder powering up, you can't have a bright blue sky and sand in the air at the same time.
This is actually a good thing.

Why so delusional OP

requesting this funny vehicle in left side of screeen
plz op

...

*right side
damn, i'm drunk

The OPs of these threads are always the biggest retards around this board.

It is clearly a different shot and 2nd looks better.

Get off your phone Mike.

here

You thought you were so smart to think this is a color grading thing kek.

It's just added visual effects, dust particles.
It's not even an argument in the video.

Just stop posting pls

see
>It's just added visual effects, dust particles.
see
No dust at the top of the screen there. Just different grading.

step aside, faggot

It's clearly a different shot.

Look at her head. Look at the backgrounds.

try harder plz

IT'S SAND, SAND ISN'T SOME MAGICAL HEAVY PARTICLE WHICH JUST HOVERS ABOVE THE GROUND SLIGHTLY IF LIFTED

HOW ARE YOU NOT GETTING THIS

GO TO A KIDS PLAYGROUND AND BLOW A FAN INTO THE SAND AND SEE IF IT GOES INTO YOUR BLIND AUTISTIC EYES

nah
Good effort though, Mike.

Calm down.
Sand would not put a blanket uniform new color over the sky.
There's only airborn sand in the bottom half of the screen.

Why do people do this?

Thats a bit more than just a fan. Suck my dick.

Why are Star Wars fans so retarded?

...

hows that visor supposed to work

why do people do this?

Answer the question.

end your life my dear amigo friend

If you are actually serious and not trolling, then find an another scene where the difference in color gradation can be seen.

Shouldn't be hard if the whole movie is color graded.

I see dust, clouds, and blue sky. Not one color for the whole sky.

i want this as my daily driver

this is a promotional pic from before the film was out.

>The color palette in TFA was fine.
it looked cheap and tacky. they made a big deal about its being shot on film but the movie ultimately looked like crap

2/2
This is as close to the exact shot as I could get, probably a different take or something.
But as you can see, the color grading is fucking oppressive in the final film.

Agreed.

This is a completed shot from ILM, there's a lot more than just colour grading going on here.

you don't know shit of color grading, photography, cinema, or how to sexually please a woman.

>there's a lot more than just colour grading going on here.
But i'm talking about the color grading. Don't give me that dust shit either.
see

I wonder why OP makes you so mad?

>sand

>dat filename

>Vader won't land on Tatooine himself, even though he was in pursuit of Leia and the plans personally
>hates sand too much

better pic

You do know that promotional pics are taken with a different camera?
You do know that different cameras have different lenses and settings?
You do know that that promotional pic was taken with a digital camera?
You do know that you are thinking you know better while taking screenshots of downsized pictures to your laughable 1366x768 resolution?

And it still isn't even the same frame. You can't do comparisons with different frames.
And if you think the first one looks better you better be trolling.

I still hope you are just baiting because this is ridiculous.

retard alert

look at the light source

...

Complaining about color grading is so fucking autistic

>look at the light source

Yeah both frames are lit with the same light, so what?

They are clearly different cameras and lenses, you can see the lens distortion in the upper pic and both of their heads are more wide.
Also the focus is much more shallow in the first pic where you can't even see the red light in the middle of the screen like in the second pic.

All post production tweaks.
Not seeing your point m8.

It's not one color for the whole sky. The middle of the sky in your OP pic is a darker blue than the sides.
Because of the sand liftoff.

You just can't see it on your little ass 1366x768monitor/laptop.

>to your laughable 1366x768 resolution?
>1366x768monitor/laptop.

What did we do to deserve console wars kiddies on Sup Forums?

What does the size of my screen have to do with anything?

can we talk about how bad Disney's audio mixing is also?

JJ mastered the movie with phone earbuds in mind.
He said this in an Entertainment Weekly magazine from last year.

This thread is retarded

The finished shot looks fine because it's a desert planet and her speeder kicks up dust

It IS color grading. The shot is obviously washed with brown/yellow in addition to the added dust effects. Color grading is post processing that can be good or bad. It doesn't literally mean that the color was ruined for an arbitrary reason, like how every movie is blue now. Some retards seem to think that because 99% of the time we get to talk about color grading, it's a bad thing.

I was never saying that color grading = bad, but they objectively made the picture more washed out, when film's big strength is it's vibrancy.

>but they objectively made the picture more washed out

That's the point. If you have dust or fog, it's going to be lighter than dark colors or shadows behind it and it makes everything pale. Not every scene needs bright colors and contrast, especially when it doesn't make sense of what you are trying to represent. If I walk outside during twilight hours I don't say "wow this looks like washed out ass".

The first pic looks more like the OT style though.
Bottom pic looks less contrast-y.

Until they invent high-contrast dust, you're shit out of luck.

>dust see

Dust doesn't work the way you think it does.

What the fuck are you talking about?
It was mixed fine and sound design by the based Ben Burrt was goat as always.

Now you are just baiting for the hell of it, TFA even got an oscar nomination for Sound Mixing

>oscar nomination
Daily reminder that Oscar voters admit to not watching all the entries for a category before voting.

...

>They are clearly different cameras and lenses
A different camera and lens isn't going to cause a colour shift like that you dingus.

Oh shit, check out this NIGHT scene!

are people in the film industry really incompetent or do they just not care since people are too uneducated to care about how it looks? I take photos and I always look for the best angle, light, colors. When it looks good I keep the photo. why the fuck are some shots so fucking bad in high budget movies

Too many television directors and not enough movie directors

>Not just composing each shot like a photo
Shiggy

OK now this shit is a non-argument. For a movie like TFA, with all the CGI, green screens, etc., there are a lot bigger fish to fry than arguing over color manipulation.

Wes' Widescreen movies>Wes' tv screen movies>Wes' 4:3 movies

I don't mind the colour grading as much as I do the over-exaggerated lighting, blooms, flares etc that feels nothing like a Star Wars movie and a lot like Bayformers. Credit to Gareth Edwards for shooting Rogue One to match A New Hope's aesthetic, it looked fantastic.

>with all the CGI, green screens

You talk like it's bad.
The blend of practicals with CGI in TFA is flawless and I bet you didn't notice atleast 50% of it until you saw the VFX breakdown.

CGI is bad when it is apparent.
The only bad apparent CGI is that yellow old Maz character, the rest is best current available CGI in the whole world done by ILM.

yeah it's practically the same look right

lmao

>Comparing production still with shot from the movie

looks like a tv show tbqhwymdf

i don't care who knows it i love this style
putting the thing in the middle is good

>The blend of practicals with CGI in TFA is flawless and I bet you didn't notice atleast 50% of it until you saw the VFX breakdown.
Come on, man. The blend didn't work at all.
You could immediately tell that something was off when you saw the x-wings and falcon flying then when they were sitting in one place.
>The only bad apparent CGI is that yellow old Maz character, the rest is best current available CGI in the whole world done by ILM.
Ironically, I thought Maz's CG was good.
Ugly design, sure, but it she looked real, unlike Snoke.

>realizes mistake
>can't make a rebuttal
>k-kkill yourself

we all fuck-up lad. accept it. move on. get aid (or in your case submissively accept a dick as this is the destiny for which you were clearly intended).

At this point it's like complaining about why movies are edited instead of being in real time. I hate Zack Synders instagram filtered garbage, but people should really focus on what's fundamentally wrong with the visuals instead of always obsessing over the post production shit.

>lucas' star wars VII
i fucking wish. then it wouldn't be worthless fan fiction

>television directors and amatuers
literally the only people disney seems intent on hiring to direct the new star wars films. and for some retarded reason they hand over creative control as well

>composing each shot like a photo
no one realizes or appreciates the fact that lucas did though

>>realizes mistake
????

>no one realizes or appreciates the fact that lucas did though
this

>mfw this thing was supposed to be as iconic as Lukes speeder
I fucking hate TFA.

Fuck yeah man. Centered/symmetrical shots are pure, distilled kino

Civil War was unbelievably bad. It was shot in the most utilitarian, boring style possible.

>lucas was a hack

What was the purpose of that thing besides plot tension?

Compare to New Hope where almost every frame is shot well and flows seamlessly into the next.

it's basically luke's speeder turned over onto its side

What other purpose does it need.

The death star could have just shot the planet that was in the way of Yavin 4.
Star Wars has never made sense.
