Huh, just saw this for the first time this weekend actually. I thought it was really great, probably would get more out of it after another viewing or two.

That's just Kurosawa generally. Don't get me wrong, he is a great filmmaker but he is also very accessible.

I claim that the only way the word pretentious is used is in itself actually pretentious. It's used in place of an argument and by itself expected to carry the weight of an argument while being utterly meaningless with out context.
