They don't write female characters to showcase female strengths, they write them to show them to be just like men. Ripley had great motherly instincts in Aliens, and the eart of the movie is her relationship with Newt. All of Ripley's abilities actually came from an established background, rather than being inexplicably granted to her because "woman power". Ripley is a good character, extremely well acted by Sigourney.
