Top 4 films
All of these are stupid hipster movies.
Real top 4 that any sensible person agrees with:
The Matrix, The Martian, Star Wars (entire franchise) and The 5th Element
Despite being a very engaging and interesring film I think "The Conversation" has evident flaws that would exclude it from a "best films of all time" list much less being distinctly named the best film of all time. Compare it to, just because its an easy example, Citizen Kane which, while tastes may differ, lacks any gross flaws.
entry level
Pretty sure op meant favorite and not best
o this isnt meant to be a "top films of all time", it's your personal top 4
>Once Upon A Time In America
>The Godfather Part II
>Taxi Driver
>Barry Lyndon
imdb baby
just saw barry lyndon a few days ago -- amazing stuff
what do you think was the reason for kubrick's extensive usage of zoom outs to set up a scene?
what evident flaws are there in "The Conversation" asides from the plot/convenient twist at the end?
I think you mean Laura, Il Conformista, The Confession and Zero de Conduite.
Ahhhhhh, my mistake. Nice taste then OP!
>Le Samourai
>Le
you need to go back

Reddit please go
LA Confidential
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Network
Chinatown
It was the 70's and zooms like that were suddenly possible.
I'd have to watch again to be sure, but when I saw it about a year ago I was annoyed by how intentionally obtuse the film is. Everything from plot progression, dialogue, the way the ending twist is revealed seemed set up to make the film's events intentionally hard to read just for the sake of being so. I didnt seem like any of the directorial choices were artistic but rather a means to an end to add suspense. It's still a great film but for lack of a better word it seemed very "hack"-ish.
Like I said though, a major caveat to my argument is how long ago I saw it and that I wasnt at all well-versed in film at the time.
>The Thing
>Who Framed Roger Rabbit
>The Godfather
>No Country for Old Men
Good taste, Le Samourai is also one of my personal favorites
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
High And Low
Triumph of the Will
How Green Was My Valley
I'll never understand why noir is so hugely popular.
>The Martian
aesthetics (shadows, hard lighting), recurring themes, pessimistic outlook on life reflecting the time period, tropes, etc.
i find it also important to appreciate film noir for what it was in order to further appreciate the subsequent films that came
The Master
Barton Fink
Taxi Driver
A Field in England
I need to watch more films before 1970
Barton Fink is great
I enjoy neo-noir more and I think filmmakers like Hanson and Polanski were able to utilize traditional noir elements to craft a more interesting plotline than traditional noir cliches.
Le samurai nothing fucking happens
There are better film noir and better French noir you fucking plebean
i'm sorry i shouldve put pulp fiction in there, that wouldve made you happier :^)

Picking my top movies gets harder as I watch more. The Third Man and Only yesterday are certainly locked in, but I can think of several movies that could be exchanged with the others.
Stagecoach is fantastic, though I prefer Clementine.
Only Yesterday is super comfy. A few months ago I went on a binge of anime movies, and that was one of my favorites. Have you seen Whisper of The Heart? It's also super nice and comfy
Yeah, Whisper of the Heart is great. Oh, and if you haven't seen Jarinko Chie yet, check it out as well. It's another film by Takahata that's a lot of fun.

Yeah you need to watch it again, it's amazing. The direction is perfect. The framing of shots and color choices are very well thought out.
Good
Why does it seem like everyone can pick 4-5 favorite movies so easily?
I myselc cannot choose 50 movies without getting a little indecise towards the end, let alone only 5. But that's maybe just me.
Don't mean to be patronizing, but maybe you haven't seen enough?
When I watched my favourite movie I knew it was my fav because of how moved I was, and not many do that.
>Taxi Driver
>The Man Who Sleeps
>Blade Runner
>Rosemary's Baby
>pre-50s movie
>foreign movie
