Does anyone really understand their tastes? I'm trying to isolate features that I like and ones that I like, but every time I think of a general rule I find exceptions to it. I'm only trying it with very specific classifications, like "what do I like in a raw bm band" or "what do I like in a funeral doom band" or "what do I like in a swedeath band" and still I've got fucking nothing that's totally consistent. The best I've come up with is that I tend towards things with many changes in the music, though there are many monotonous DSBM tracks I love which contest this. I probably have to get a little more complex and look at the interplay of various elements rather than isolating them, or some other total rethinking of the methodology.
I'm not smart enough nor do I know enough about music theory to figure this out.

Every artist has a different approach to his craft, that's what makes art so diverse to begin with, so rather than focusing on what specific elements you'd like to hear from a genre, try understanding the artist approach and the intentions he put through his music instead. That's the key to being able to enjoy literally everything.

or some are more fruitful and others less so
of course everything can be done in a way I don't enjoy, but maybe figuring out tendencies still makes sense
I tend to like my black metal chaotic and with shrill guitar tones
I tend to like my funeral doom to balance being melodic and crushingly heavy and with minimal ambient synth bullshit
so this is some level of understanding, but nothing great, and not very useful or sophisticated
it's just some inane pleb shit right now
