I've the opportunity to get either an LX25+ or a GX49 for $50. Which one should I go for? I know for certain that the GX49 would be better for learning piano, but the LX25+ is chock-full of features that would be useful (such as the pads)

Have to decide within the next two hours. pls help!

does this video give you hope? Tutorial guy grew up poor with retarded friends and people passed out in their front yards in the hood as a kid and somehow made it in the industry.

can anyone recommend a good VST synth for 90s sync sounds?

Sorry, I mean like actual oscillator sync effect vst rather than a rompler with sync effect instruments on it.

Well, there goes the thread

>I have a bunch already
>need to buy hardware Dx

Hey look it's froge poster again

I like frogposter. He makes bad music and doesn't afraid of anything

I got the LX25 and I kinda regret not getting a bigger one. Definitely start out with a bigger one, then if you have to move around a lot you can invest in a smaller one. (I'd honestly rec the MPK Mini MKII over the LX25+)

...Is that an Arby and the Chief reference?

apparently but its more like an oldfag meme

>reply to frogposter

Why did digitalqu33r have to ruin the show by reviving it after a solid ending :((((

And why does it seem like /prod/ dies on the weekend- no dedication :(

Where do people that are actually knowledgable discuss production? besides here. Reddit forums are essentially people promotion their guides

>get bored with the guitar
>listen to Surf's Up
>want to learn how to play piano
>listen to the Mars Volta
>want to get better at guitar again

What should I do? I don't have any experience playing the piano but I'm also only a mediocre guitar player. I feel like I can't focus on learning both at the same time, so should I pick up the piano or try to get better at guitar?

Are you fucking serious figure it out yourself. Nobody knows what would be more useful to you

If we advertised them than less knowledgeable producers will show up :^(

Also once you reach that point "discussion" loses its value and you're just answering other people's questions lol

>secret club

r/WeAreTheMusicMakers is probably the most decent production subreddit. The other subreddits that I know of are either trash or have no traffic. r/edmproduction is a fucking joke.

It's a shame forums like Gearslutz tend to be shitty for totally different reasons.

If you're going to do this every day at least post it.

why is this all so difficult :-(

>circle jerking "u can do it xD"
>I made a song every mounth and this is what I learned!
>frequent bad advice
>check my tutorial on what is a compesssion also check out my SoundCloud :p
>most decent

Sad. Tbh I've been checking there and /r/audioengineering dailyish for a couple years at least and I cant say watmm is ever helpful outside of a few samples and maybe for depression if it hits you a lot lol.

Ae tends to have a lot more discussion, but there is a clear split between people who actually work in the field and probably don't produce, and then the flip side who asks dumb/techsupport questions and gets corrected whenever they try to chime in.

Eh

anybody know any good free stereo expander vsts?

>Also once you reach that point "discussion" loses its value and you're just answering other people's questions lol
Unless you're the top worldwide guru, there's always something new to learn from other people who are better/specialized in different areas than those you're strong in, and can provide a different perspective on how to do things.
For example, I might be the best EDM producer in the world and have nothing to learn from other EDM producers, but a conversation with an experienced rock producer might still teach me a lot, and vice versa.
Or maybe I'm very good at everything but one guy is excellent at this one thing, and it can still be helpful for both to discuss our ways of doing stuff.

There's always some field (niche or not) that you don't know about, like for example one day you're schooling beginners on mastering, and the other you're being schooled about list processing in Max.

Ideally a good forum with experienced members would have people striving to learn from each other and expand their knowledge in all possible areas.
Good luck doing it here though. Every time I've seen someone discuss new techniques or different ways of doing things they were treated like morons who wasted their time on pointless bullshit instead of doing things "the right way".

should I be worried about people stealing my shit if I post it here for advice

many thanks user!!

If someone here steals from you, they're likely not famous enough for it to matter (and you'd never even know).
If you want you can upload it somewhere else like on YouTube (or just never delete the clyp.it file) so if someone famous actually decided to steal from you, you just tell everyone that it was your stuff and show them the proof.
No different than someone stealing from your finished songs on SC really.

true true you're right it'd be easy to prove it was me esp if it's performance based rather than sequenced so I shouldn't worry it's just I haven't seen it with music but I've seen people balantly steal youtube videos etc and I was warned that people sometimes go to open mic nights to steal songs

This is because /prod/ is almost exclusively filled with beginners, morons, and overall shit producers.
I've seen/had good music production discussion on Sup Forums and Sup Forums, but they were always in specific threads and never in /prod/ generals.
Which means that the experienced people are here but never come inside the /prod/ general (because it would just be them teaching noobs and get shitposted).

If we had a music making board (for people who produce, compose, play instruments, etc.) there would be generals for beginners and feedback, so people who want actual discussion (even on niche topics) can have their own threads that the people knowledgeable in the right field would see and contribute to.
Right now not only is /prod/ a shitshow that no one would want to go in, but they also last so little on the catalog (due to the fast rate of thread creation on Sup Forums) that if you ask something that's a bit specific, you only have a short window of time for it to be seen by someone who knows about it, before disappearing in the archive.

Sup Forums, with all the music listening threads, celebrity worship, waifuing, and shitposting, is just not the right place for music making discussion, which I believe is a very widespread interest considering all the people who dabble in one aspect or another of music making.
Certainly more widespread than certain other interests that have their own super slow boards.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but you can't really worry about it too much.
It's just part of putting yourself out there, so you think proactively and protect yourself by having proof in case it happens.

The synth that comes in at :19 si too quiet. The hi hat that happens at the end of the bar is too high, try transposing it or changing the sound, its sibiliant.

The track promise upbeatness and a continuation of the intro but doesn't deliver and falls flat with the sustaned chords when the drums hit.

It needs a main melody or point of interest probably a vocal line would do it.

Something too simple with the drums there needs to be a shika or chiku chiku or some shit you know what I mean, they're kind of boring. Try an modulating them slightly also look up how to do drum patterns on youtube.

You're all right, don't be too hard on yourself, there's a sustained period of pain with producing before you feel comfortablish

my dudes, i want to program some drums for my gay ass guitar songs but i am overwhelmed by the possibilities

are there like go-to drum VSTs or sample packs or do I just have to sort through all that's out there?

>If we had a music making board
We all need to start pestering Hiroshimoot constantly about this. The main argument I've seen against a /prod/ board is that there isn't enough interest, but there are other boards on Sup Forums that are slow as fuck but are kept around regardless.

Where's the best place to lobby for this? Do we create and keep a thread bumped about it on /qa/, or do we email Hiro directly?

it would be a slow ass board
look at the catalog, music making is probably like 10% of Sup Forums or less
i feel like there are probably more relevant boards that need to be done, Sup Forums is mainly an anime website and has lately shifted towards incels and Sup Forumstards

>it would be a slow ass board
Right, but /3/ for example has threads on it that haven't had a reply in 2 weeks. Same with /gd/. /i/ has threads with the last reply being 3 weeks ago.

A /prod/ board wouldn't be any slower.

actually this could be an argument, Sup Forums is too fast for musician threads and only a couple generals can survive (sometimes)

the problem is hiro is probably getting more requests to make either more anime boards or something like national socialist or men's rights boards right now considering the state of this website

anyway let me bump my reply pls respond

Look into EZdrummer:

toontrack.com/product/ezdrummer-2/

Just get Ableton and use basic drum sounds, you can always edit them later on.

it looks cool but i'm scared that it will be too """realistic""" like it's trying to be a drummer and take me straight to uncanny valley
i could actually get a drummer for this but i want to take a shot at fingerdrumming on some pads and see what i can come up with

will do, thanks guys

Can someone knowledgeable help me put a name to what makes these sounds:

the "bundle of steel pipe being scooted across a smooth concrete floor" sound heard at 0:38

the funky ocillating instrument that starts up 3 seconds in
youtube.com/watch?v=E2j1AbfC3eQ

picosong.com/wqWz8/

Dunno where to go with this now. It's a bit short.

>actually this could be an argument, Sup Forums is too fast for musician threads and only a couple generals can survive (sometimes)
And it was. Here: >Right now not only is /prod/ a shitshow that no one would want to go in, but they also last so little on the catalog (due to the fast rate of thread creation on Sup Forums) that if you ask something that's a bit specific, you only have a short window of time for it to be seen by someone who knows about it, before disappearing in the archive.

the funky oscillating thing is an electric organ with a leslie rotating spearker effect

the terminator thing is some pitched percussive sound or maybe a string sample with a lot of attack with a lot of reverb i guess, don't quote me on that one

i'd love some pointers on how to fix the mix or master on this one

clyp.it/xfgbk1lz?token=5fcc813449aa185cc3640d469a97e0f2

>bleep
>lo-fi house

Terminator would be a low 'orchestra hit' on an old keyboard maybe roland

>The main argument I've seen against a /prod/ board is that there isn't enough interest
When there's a music production themed thread on Sup Forums (but outside general threads) it's always full of people having actual discussion, and it almost always reaches bump limit.
It only seems that there's little interest if you only look at /prod/ that most people into music making don't even visit.

The people are clearly on Sup Forums (all around the boards), and the interest is clearly there.

Thank you guys.

Anybody use an MPD218? Wondering how it is. I'm looking for a good drum pad MIDI controller with some knobs, and this is the only thing I can find that looks like it's both inexpensive and not a piece of shit.

Really wish I had $800 for an Ableton Push 2...

Is there a tool that you'd recommend for finding scales from a few chosen notes?

Is there any benefit to writing the music first rather than creating as you go along and build songs organically?

How do I find VSTs that I don't know about?

How do you stop asking easily googleable questions

What for? Why spend money on VSTs you don't need?

Don't advertise google, you shouldn't encourage people to use that site. Just say easily "searchable".

Do you use bing, yahoo

This is what I use:
scales-chords.com/scalefinder.php

It helps mantaining the same mindset throughout the entire writing process (instead of switching back and forth between composing, sound designing, mixing, etc.) which helps making more cohesive music (since you'd compose it with the same "vision" for lack of a better word, instead of trying to frankenstein different parts together to make them fit).

Also if you compose everything with saw waves or some basic sound, you won't get tricked by sound design into thinking what you're composing is good.

But it all depends on the kind of music you make.
Some genres like Dubstep (or any kind of music which is essentially just showing off your sound design) benefit from doing the opposite.

Thanks. Actually, I tried it before but it didn't seem to work (now it does).

clyp.it/ubshjvhc

First time; please be gentle.

I use searx and DuckDuckgo. Other search engines ar available.

Anyone else producing/mixing metal?

>melodic death metal

Would love mix critique

what a nerd

I wish I could, but my gear is too shitty. Actually, when I first started using a DAW, I wanted to start an instrumental project a la Oranssi Pazuzu, but since I couldn't get decent results (and programming rock drums is lame), I moved to something else.

Nobody really pays any attention to the drums, it's not going to really be noticeably fake unless your drum programming isn't very good.

how can I make happy hardcore like this?
youtube.com/watch?v=EYSYLt14miM

I can never find a good lead synth or a good off beat bass. whenever I try to put the both together, they sound like ass! one of the sounds is always on top of the other. and don't even get me started on how the kick is either dominating the track or in the background!
as you can tell, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this type of sound. I can make things like tech house and chill trap beats, but when it comes to trancey stuff like this, that sounds really big and opened, I'm fucking awful!

Had a pretty long thread on B the other day about keyboards and picking what synths to buy. Some sort of music making board would be cool as heck, but I still don't think there is enough interest to justify making an entire board.

Bass thing is okay, no idea what you're trying to get across with that high synth. It it following some sort of melody, or do you have it just making high pitched notes with out any sort of rhyme or reason?

You're wrong.
Both about the lack ofinterest, and the quality of that pathetic thread on Sup Forums.
Also
>B

I do metal sometimes, I've posted some of it before. Mix is good, bass might be a tad muddy in my opinion. Maybe give it some highs for more definition?

Talking gear with people other than the autists on reddit was fun though :(

Also wrong.
You actually had no fun, remember?

I meant

What gear are you using that's "too shitty"?

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and just plug the guitar/bass into that and use ampsims (mostly Bias) in the DAW (I use Reaper). For miking acoustic I just have a shitty condenser mic that I got bundled with the Scarlett. For drums I use Addictive Drums 2.

Thanks! Actually the bass has a lot of distortion going on in the mid/highs already but I might have done a bit too many cuts in the EQ to keep it under control. I find it really hard to find that balance between it not sounding flat/muddy and not sounding too harsh and stabbing through everything in the mix when it's playing anything other than the lowest string.

Getting the bass right is always the hardest part for me when I mix stuff, so I definitely get that. The music I play is almost exclusive dumb metal on the lowest string so I don't have to deal with too much though.

I do like the sound you have for the acoustic guitars though, mine always sounds like trash. What does the effect chain you have on them look like?

I'm living abroad, so I can't carry many things around. I just have a cheap twanger, a boss me25, a steinberg DI, a usb keyboard and Ableton.
I guess I can usually get a decent sound with that, but it just doesn't feel right. Programming drums is too complicated when it comes to metal songs and it obviously feels unnatural.
Yet, I often think of how I could make it work.

didn't listen but you don't have to worry about bass sounding flat, no one cares about a bass tone as long as the note is heard

Here's the chain I used. The compressor in the bottom right is there on each individual track (4 tracks) to level them out and tame peaks. That compressor is on max since I didn't record them very hot, it at most catches 7db reduction on peaks and is mostly between 0-3db. Then I just send the group to a reverb track and a delay track (I used same reverb/delay tracks for acoustics, lead guitar and synths).

Well as long as you can get your guitar DI into your DAW you should be set. Programming drums can seem pretty complicated at first but it gets easier. Just gotta get used to the piano roll. I'm no master at programming drums but if I listen to my programming from a couple years ago I really had no clue at all, so it's nice to feel you're improving. Unless I have a specific idea of how I want the drums to be I find it easiest to just start with programming a really basic beat to the riff you're going to play, record the riff over that beat, then adjust and add in extra stuff to the drum midi to make it sync better with what's being played.

Tbh in metal having a good bass tone is 50% of the way to a good guitar tone

Programming metal drums isn't unnatural, and as long as you have a daw and an interface you can make metal songs!

Drums can be kind of complicated though, one thing that really helped my drum programming was to try to program the drums that were on an actual cd. Really helped me figure out how a drummer plays and how they do fills or cymbal hits.

If you keep thinking about it, you should definitely give it a shot

I was going for something else someone did on /prod/ a little while back. Like a playful tune.

This is also a great tip, I've done that a couple times and it really helps get a feel for how a drummer plays.

Do you like 'and justice for all?

Alright, thanks for getting back to me! I'll take a look at it and play around with my own daw to see if I can get a better acoustic sound.

Definitely underrated tip here. Having a good bass tone helps beef up the guitars.

thinking about getting this, anyone has it? is it worth ?

I did 10 years ago when I first started listening to metal. Now, not so much.
