If you have to do something, even though you should leave it the fuck alone, I'd say slightly detune the strings. Not even a full half step. Just barely. Maybe even just a few of the strings.
Won't damage it, but if you do this very often, it'll be very annoying. Similar to slightly shifting te funiture in someone's house.

swap the string order, ie low e is closer to the bottom and the thinnest string is at the top maybe swap around the volume / tone knobs?

You'd have to recut the nut to change the string order, I believe.
And you'd need to remove or disconnect parts to change control order. Either by unscrewing the actual electronic component of the knobs and switching them around or by unsoldering the wires and changing the connections.
Overall, there are too many chances to cause damage for this to be worth it.

Fuck GHS, those strings were a week old. I've literally swapped some sets of daddario strings over 5 times on different basses and they never just suddenly went dead on me. Put the entire old daddario set on there now, still sounds fine and at least I don't have any dead strings.

Its certainly an upgrade, if you can find a good used one id go for it but there's nothing wrong with mim. The neck and hardware will be the biggest differences, along with qc. You could get some different pups for a mim and have a great guitar

They're O.K., not great, but not terrible. If you spend the money on a MIM only to get a DiMarzio loaded pickguard you just might as well get the American, or settle for mediocre.
