Did prog fuck itself as a genre because its album covers are all fucking DUDE WEED LMAO kinds of awful?

Did prog fuck itself as a genre because its album covers are all fucking DUDE WEED LMAO kinds of awful?

This is the good type of Prog cover though desu. Too many of them were just "generic fantasy landscape." Gong at least had a coherent and interesting design to a lot of their covers.

I like this cover. Its simplistic and it features one of the main characters in the radio gnome lore: a pot head pixie, flying in his flying teapot.

Gong had cool covers though

Canterbury and Krautrock covers aren't nearly as cheesy as the british prog covers.

it fucked itself when it became derivative

depends on what covers we're talking about here
Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant all had great covers

Gentle Giant's album covers are the worst of them all. Only Power and the Glory doesn't look like disgusting 1970s garbage

Why do you hate album covers with actual artwork on them? Do you prefer just a boring picture of the band by an amateur photographer?

You forgot someone. You know, the big prog band that everyone forgets for some reason.

wtf lad
I don't care much for ELP's album covers. Even BSS, as praised as its art is, doesn't do much for me

All of these look awful. Progcucks have no taste.

Fuck off back to your soundcloud rap thread.

>hurr he doesn't like awful prog cover art
>that means he likes rap

Top 5 albums. Now.

Alright, sorry, we'll give you a chance, what do you actually listen to?

...

Is that actually you, Mr. Scaruffi? It's a pleasure!

>half of those albums are prog

Not sure what point you're trying to make here...

>you can't like an album because it has bad cover art

Album cover aesthetics only

Prog metal

Modern "prog rock"

The fuck are you talking about? There's nothing better than a good illustration for an album. But most prog covers look fucking horrible - complete kitsch to anyone who doesn't think Dan Simmons is the best writer of all time

The only modern album covers that approach that specific type of hideousness tend to be twee nerdcore like AJJ that blend that aesthetic with deviantART crap

prog is bloated style-over-substance garbage loved only by DnD nerds

fuck off

The sci-fi literature aesthetic is what I love most about 70s prog rock album covers.

they are just album covers, why are you looking too deeply into them?

What? Prog is all about style and substance over commercialism and popularity.

Most early prog acts are literally proto-AOR.

Trips confirm

You're a faggot, go listen to MGMT and Animal Collective.

Like every genre, it's like that for the first few years until it becomes popular and record labels realize they can profit off watering it down and making it more commercial sounding.

not as good as cardiacs, gentle giant, and magma

stuff can be very hit or miss. i like gongs a lot actually. tend to like the whimsical tripped out childrens illustration type shit. over muh epic looking stupid ass shit

This is the best Gong cover btw

Tarkus has a much more proggy cover
This cover is shit though

I love Camel covers, classic KC covers are awesome (except for Red), the drawings on Yes covers are very cool as well, ELP self titled is meh but Tarkus is great, Pink Floyd has very iconic and good looking covers too... I don't get the point. The cover art is a great part of prog. What killed prog was the 80s.

Its really just that image, normally that cover looks better

>Prog Metal
>God tier
Dream Theater, Symphony X and all that wank have terrible covers

Oh yeah, but I was thinking of Mastodon and Tool. I don't think of those shitty bands.

Try-hard contrarian i see, no wonder why rap is such an acclaimed genre around Sup Forums

a passion play and thick as a brick have god tier covers, but the rest of their discography was hit or miss regarding art

This. Birth Control had cool covers

>Roger Dean album covers
>disgusting
pick one

pic related has a cool album cover, and a cool story to go along with it
> "The story of the album title supposedly arises from an exchange between the hired graphic designer and band members Steve Howe and Chris Squire. Upon being shown the simplistic black-to-green gradient the designer intended to use as the background for the album cover, Howe inquired, 'Where are you going to put the text?'. Before the designer had a chance to respond, Squire remarked, 'I think you should put it close to the edge, at the top there'.[2]"

i have no opinion, just came to post DUDE prog album covers

IM SO FUCKING HIGH BRAH
