I think you're exaggerating by calling them conventionally attractive. Their actors got more conventionally attractive (Krasinski esp) as they hit the big time, but early on Jim was a lanky guy with a big nose and a bowlcut, and Pam was a bit doughy and plain. They could both be cute but they were by no means particularly glamorous or hot.
