Simpsons was never good. It certainly had a golden age, but it wasn't nearly as great as people try to pass it. The "layered" humor is simply a joke not shoved at your face, something that was done a thousand times before and much better. It eventually fell to it's own procedural aspects and died a quick death.
The reason Simpsons receives so much praise is spic nostalgia and how bad the later seasons are in comparison.

I think 9 is where the show starts to decline. 10, 11, and 12 all get progressively worse but at least have a few decent episodes. 13+ is just irredeemably awful.

13 is when everything went wrong, not a single good or redeemable episode and it's when I stopped watching live or didn't care anymore. Too much celebrity worship(Alec Baldwin episode and Homer remaking Mel's movie, etc), and less grounded in reality.
I swear that fucking episode with the old western star is when my love for The Simpsons legit died, boring, awful piece of crap.
