When Clint Eastwood has directed it in the past 15 years.
when it's dishonest
Usually if its a biopic on someone famous, if its a movie touching on racial or some other social justice topic, or a movie that has zero action whatsoever and focuses on ugly people or little girls
When you can picture the whole movie without seeing it, just seeing the trailer and title.
best example I can think off is that Steven Hawkins movie from last year. Inoffensive, hitting each beat perfectly with predictable arcs and story.
A movie that wins best picture and is immediately forgotten and never talked about again
when I don't like it
when the story and characters/performances are ham-fisted.
>period drama
>features social conflicts
>a hero against all odds
Name one (1) oscar winning movie that isn't like this
When the editing and plot could be analyzed with the scope of 20 years ago.
The plot has a 'point' it makes in the end about society or humanity.
The characters could exist in RL.
The Artist.
this to be quite honest
>mfw Eddie Redmang won over Steve Carell
The Butler
everything released between the new years and the oscars is bait
Signs of Oscarbait
>film about social issues (racial or gender/sexuality)
>film with a message
>biopic
>overacting
>Meryl Streep is in it
>based on a true story
>War movies
>Holocaust movies
>the starring actor category winner beat the actor nomination for supporting actor
Period pieces, true stories, and movie based movies.
Can either really good or really bad.
You mean Eastwood causes Trouble with the curve?
Valid responses but the crucial element is the timing.
Notice how all this fucking movies get released at the same time at the end of the year.
birdman
also oscarbait
When it scoffs the industry in a safe way
It must be an adaptation
Besides a period drama that's the vast majority of movies but I'll bite
Mad Max Fury Road
no country for old men
>birdman
>the departed
A holocaust movie or something portraying the heroic struggle of people of colour or LGBTQIA individuals against straight white oppression.
Ten thousand points to Griffindor if you combine all of the above.
when its full of niggers, women and jews
Literally this. My friends get mad because I refuse to see Hidden Figures even though it's gonna be
>black people show up
>"we don't like your kind"
>they do their job
>they need help with job
>"we ain't helping you cause you black"
>do job correctly anyways
>they gain respect from whites
>"you know what...we a team now"
>accomplish another task
>end of movie with text explaining what else happened after
Fucking hell
-When it appeals to emotion in an exagerated manner and tries to push forward a progressive message that ANYBODY can agree on (in the current year).
-When it shines light on a subject beloved by all (those in charge of Hollywood)
-When it tries to be oldschool in a modern way.
Cant think of any more.
these
also
>costume drama
>released in the last two months of the year
American Dad and College Humor summed it up pretty well
Congratulations, you just saved $10 by not spending it on a movie theater ticket and still having the same experience as the plebs.
>hardship
>overcome
>respect
>credits
every fucking time I swear
that was a well-deserved win.
>screaming
>but no sound
lost it
Oscar bait movies
>crash-shit
>imitation game-shit
>hidden figures-shit
>moonlight-good
>Lincoln-average
>amistad-dogshit
>la la land-good
>the artist-shit
>war horse-shit
>seven pounds-shit
>collateral beauty-shit
>the butler-shit
>Selma-average
>12 years a slave-average
>birdman-average
Any questions?
Fuck, I don't remember the last time I watched College Humor but that one is gold.
>forgetting the all-important "love letter to hollywood" category
La La Land and The Artist would like a word with you.
I also forgot
>invictus-shit
>birth of a nation-shit
>J Edgar-shit
>precious-shit
It's doubly annoying with Hidden Figures because Katherine Johnson says she never felt a hint of racism at NACA/NASA and no one was racist towards her. The movie had to invent several characters and situations to be racist to her.
It was frustrating. The other two story arcs involved actual, institutionalized racism that weren't fabricated from thin air (petitioning courts for black women to attend engineering school).
the artist was so fucking terrible
>social conflict
>hero against all odds
birdman was actually good though
When it gets made
I'll tell you when it doesn't. If it's a movie that is good enough to win an oscar but has one too many dicks in it.
A different question: is there something like a good, "good" or so bad it's good Oscar bait? Or, what's your favourite?
That's why I liked the iminitation game
>hardship
>overcome
>hardship
>dead
>*respect*
>Selma average
Did you watch the same movie I did with the scene that follows Oprah's face as she falls down?
That was straight up from Dr dlittle
>birdman was actually good though
no
what if a movie merged all of these tropes
when it's about the holocaust or 9/11
>nineleven
le mao zedong, no
>hollacost
yep, almost every one I can think of
>comes out towards the end of the year
>movie's entire purpose is to make the audience tear up slightly
Congratulations you now have an Oscar. No one will remember your movie in 5 years.
And birdman
Also birdman
The problem is that due to how voting works it's not the best film that win, but the second best. The one with the least oplosition to it.
For those that don't know:
The judges basically make a top 10 list. Hardly any film will score 1st place with all the judges, but thypical oscar baits tend to get 2nd and 3rd places with most of them.
Slow and steady wins the race to put it in other words
When it has little substance but has a list of factors that will contribute to it winning an Oscar
>holocaust
>biopic
>film is about acting itself
>radical weight loss/gain (or just appearance transformation)
>peadophillia
Bullshit like this. Its why Argo won despite being an above average thriller, its why the Arist won and its why Lala land will win.
You forgot
> 2nd act Montage.
> Slow clap as the underdogs are finally accepted.
>(or just appearance transformation)
Good call. Cloud Atlas took it to a shameless degree.
