It's a red herring. They're there to make you think these girls are the main characters, so it's more shocking when they get killed off.
It worked for Psycho, and it worked for Alien, so I guess Tarantino figured it'd work here.

First hour is COMPLETELY pointless, it does really boring character introductions for a fucking hour just to kill them all off and then restart the same thing with basically the same characters but not
I guess I get the idea on paper, you think they're the main characters then they get killed off.. but it didn't work at all for me. I knew they were going to die as well. Given that I knew the movie had a murderer and Kurt Russel was being weird, it's pretty obvious he was going to kill them.
Having said all that, I didn't mind it nearly as bad the second time I watched it.
