No, the smiths are garbage. You want a good post punk band check out the chameleons

not really

maybe their first album a little but still not really

yeah

pic related is the best post punk album of course

Bad taste

The Smiths are Jangle pop, they have some post punk songs but I wouldn’t tag the whole band with the title. They’re also highly overrated imo. The Queen is Dead is their only truly great album.

Gonna dump some god tier post punk

>the banshees
>god tier
damn bro stop embarrassing yourself

Bands commonly labeled post-punk that are not actually post-punk:

Smiths
U2
Echo & the Bunnymen
Talking Heads
The Jesus & Mary Chain
Devo
Japan
Depeche Mode
Magazine
Wire
Mission of Burma
Nick Cave/Birthday Party
Early R.E.M.
XTC

They’re fantastic, and one of the original fathers of the genre with The Scream in ‘78. You’re fucked in the head m8

>the chameleons
>the banshees
>echo and the bunnymen
this is all momcore bottom tier shit

hot opinions indeed you cock hoover

Not true btw

>wire
>mission of burma
>not post punk
explain yourself

Wtf is post punk

what genres are early nick cave and magazine then?

I respectfully disagree. There’s a lot of different sounds in post punk and on the poppier side those bands have some great tracks

...

...

t. tripfag forgetting to take his name off while sucking himself off

the killing moon is a fantastic song but i hate everything else on that album
same with the chameleons, i like one of their songs and that’s it

too poppy and generic sounding for me

they've got post-punk songs

youtube.com/watch?v=eOOj_dslOEs

but no, they're more jangle pop

I forgot to add image lol chill
I can respect that, it’s not all for everyone. I actually think Killing Moon is one of the poppiest tracks on the album so that’s interesting, but I agree it’s a great song.

>the sluts
literally just a shittier pop group

Great Italian post punk album here
In a way I agree but I love both. Y is a masterpiece so it’s not like thats such an insult. They’re also way more into dub than Mark Stewart was, which says a good bit

yeah that’s the problem, dumbass white bitches getting way to into reggae
also that joint release they did with the pop group is seriously 100% terrible

just look at this shit

Fair criticism, I like the album tho. No disagreement about the collab lol don’t remind me

now this is one of my favorite albums of all time, too bad there’s not much like it

this too

start here to get a grasp on post-punk

...

Mine too. It’s funny how many people attempt its sound too and are influenced by it but no one comes anywhere close to it. Gill’s just an incredible guitarist when it comes to the sound he gets. I actually saw them two years ago touring for what’s next(underrated album imo) and he still has crazy energy for his age. He was wailing. Nice guy too, told him I was a big fan. Love the Au Pairs

Fuckin love this cover art

>album is proto-punk and post-punk at the same time

Let's post some good post-punk

youtube.com/watch?v=VcDbAnNcu_s

wrong, that's the only one that most people listen to but it is by no means their best.

youtube.com/watch?v=F9TxkrdPPx0

youtube.com/watch?v=TC49m_b88wA

Why do people insist this isn't post-punk?

>1977
>proto-punk

Because it annoys faggots

nah this is true proto-post-punk

I'm not sure that's post-punk anymore, except for the closer which seems like a Birthday Party leftover (in the best possible way). I think that album's closer to a sort of gothic-rock-esque dark cabaret thing. Definitely more Cohen/Tom Waits than Birthday Party and the like

weak

The Chameleons > The Smiths. I mean, even their lyrics are more resonating than anything Morrissey's ever penned.

"In Shreds":
Ignored by you all
I stumble and fall
I suddenly knew
My life meant nothing at all
In shreds
I stare down at the street
Yearning for sleep
That blissful escape
But when it comes it's always too late
The whore in my bed
The noise in my head
A hole in my pride
It's coming and there's nowhere to hide

its proto because they were playing these songs live since the early 70s and were very influential on the scene despite not having a record out.

It’s not even that it’s proto in regard to influence of the genre(punk’s been around since the Sonics in ‘63) but more so just the pure sound of the album
While it’s my favorite I respect that opinion. They have a lot of great albums

kinda, they do have post-punk ish songs

>momcore
dude stop using buzzwords to hide your shit taste in music

>Smiths
they just have some songs, but most are pure jangle pop / indie pop
>U2
they were post-punk up to War
>Echo
not labeling them post-punk up to Ocean Rain is pure blasphemy
>Talking Heads
mostly new wave but with lots of post-punk traits still
>Jesus & Mary Chain
basically noise pop through a post-punk filter
>Devo
their first record was a new wave post-punk hybrid
>Japan
agreed, they weren't
>Depeche Mode
agreed too
>Magazine
blasphemy
>Wire
NIGGA WAT
>Mission of Burma
BOY STOP
>Nick Cave
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>early REM
their early records had some post-punk ish vibes
>XTC
just Drum and Wires

just up to Drum and Wires*

powerful stuff...
