American here. All my US friends on Facebook are up in arms about Brexit. Basically everyone wanted remain. When I ask them why they were against leaving, the only thing they ever respond with is "It's racist."
As someone who just genuinely wants to know why people oppose Brexit, is this true? Is the media in Britain saying the same thing? That the only reason to be against leaving is because it's racist?

Pretty much a lot of my leftie chums on facebook are butthurt because it's racist. I have a handful of friends who work abroad in the EU and they are understandably uncertain about their future and careers, ditto european friends living and working in the UK. There's also a couple of people with significant others from EU countries that are a bit uncertain about what's going off, and they're not happy.
So yeah, there's some with legitimate reasons, but I'd say they're in the minority of people "disappointed" with the country because it's "racist". Damn old white people. I've been very calm and measured and not mentioned what my intentions to vote were and how I voted to anyone, but I think people are starting to suspect now.

I had a problem with the fact the EU Commission, is not really democratically accountable. I had hoped there would be some traction on that and there could be reform and a second referendum. Anyway, alot of leavers voted due to immigration, though that could be seen as racist , UK is already quite mixed and I think it was about the pressure on wages it created for a majority of residents here. Some argue to deny a Romanian £9 an hour in uk when he works for £3ph in Romania so you can earn £11ph as a native uk resident is racist as you are denying the Romanian an opportunity. I don't think it is racist at all.

The political class calls us racist everytime we complain that we can't get school places, our youth can't find jobs and our NHS is overloaded. Personally I think the majority of these issues are fault of our own government but if your own government does listen to you, and you're given an opportunity to show them they do not speak for you then people will take it. The way the political class in both the uk and EU have utter disdain for the public and democracy it was inevitable that people would lash out.
Outside of that the EU can only work if everyone is under the euro and the EU has tighter regulation and more controls to ensure no governments will go into recession and hurt the continents currency which will affect them all greately. A lot of people are not happy about this and this is one of the main reasons I voted out. Win or lose, I would rather it be on our own terms, there would be so much animosity in Europe if it caused economic instability and broke under great strain, better to get out now while things are going okay and if they want to continue with their project they can go ahead. Sadly it seems only because we left they are now thinking about bringing more democracy to the EU, FUNNY THAT!
