home video, the death of the drive-in, the advent of the internet

also 90s/00s Italian adult films are the dankest

giallo fell out of favour and argento and the others stopped getting as good budgeting.

Still some decent films every once in a while

recommendations on those italian adult films? I enjoy seeing women with really severe eyebrows get railed.

All these are right but also this didn't help-- The Government got involved in their financing structure-- Laziness ensued. Everyone makes a film so that a small board of people will approve their budget. So those few people make choices for their entire industry. Canada has the same issue.

never knew about that, sad

Gamiani
X Hamlet
Adventures on the Orient Express
Casino
Concetta Licata
Stavros
Tarzan X: The Shame of Jane
Umile Serve
Il Confessionale
Angelica 1 & 2
I Vizi Delle Collegiale
Roma 1-3

Just a few recs, and I would recommend anything directed by Luca Damiano, Mario Salieri or Nicky Ranieri

saved, many thanks

There's a thread on /t/ about this:

...

This must be the most wasted potential giallo ever.
The entire subplot of the R&D institute carrying out genetic research was more interesting than the actual culprit

Italy stopped being an independent country. Same goes for all European cinema.

And this. Doesn't help that most of the financing comes from EU-related sources.

it was one of the first in the genre i think, probably explains why it felt so odd when compared to others.

always dig the extreme close ups of the eyes though

severe eyebrows and a weird fascination with fucking the clergy

Italian porn in a nutshell

Also, shemales

Italian cinema is so shit now. There was a time it was good.

Spanish cinema has always been shit.

France still makes kino.

It felt strange though it's as if Argento did not have a clue where to go with it so he just opted for

LMAOOO IT WAS THIS GUY WHO TRIED TO STEAL INFORMATION BOOM HE DEAD MOVIE OVER

This was the same year as Woman in a Lizards Skin right? Could be he was just putting more effort into that as its a much better film, best of the trilogy actually.

Shame Argento could not carry out his original intention of setting it in alternate reality where Axis won WW2, a remnant of that though is the scenes featuring "strange architecture"(futurism the italian fascist endorsed movement)

I love it. It's my favourite giallo, even though I think Bird with the Crystal Plumage is a better representation of the genre.

No, there had been giallo for at least 6-7 years by that point. Blood and Black Lace is a really archetypical giallo from 1964. The girl who knew too much even preceedes that.

By 1971 people were already making variations on Gialli. Also, The Cat is much better than Four Flies... mostly thanks to Michael Brandon being an awful actor and James Franciscus being fucking top dollar.

Thats Fulci...

it still has this "alternate reality" vibe to it which benefits the film, one of Argento's best

Shame they couldn't have stuck with the original intention.

These two ruined everything. Fuck neo-realism, let's make fake docs about cannibals!

Thats what Mussolini said

Gotta love him

I never got the appeal of those Mondo movies, 2bh

Also forgot to say

It feature the legend Giuliano Gemma

What did Argento mean by this?

...

Best (non-argento) Giallo coming through

Italy did nothing wrong

Martino is amazing

Fenech had the best set of torpedoes ever

holy shit this thread is gold

I think it was the home video market that killed it. There used to be 10,000 cinemas in Italy and people would go multiple times a week, meaning it was worth making and marketing films for Italians

They got cucked into the EU

soundtracks

Show me a better twist

I couldn't finish this movie. It was too suspenseful, I thought I was gonna fucking die.

Reminder that the best Italian genre is poliziotteschi.

Watched this recently, the film sucks but the ending is absolutely phenomenal

best eurocrime movie incoming

Always bet on Bruno Mattei

there was a huge contraction of the film market in general in the '80s and '90s and film industries in several countries died. it's quite sad. there used to be so many options and now it's all the same shit.

Jap film market has gone to shit too.

Should I watch this if I haven't seen a lot of movies in the genre? I don't like spoilers.

Also recommend movies. I loved Street Law.

Caliber 9

Yes, it's probably better if not familiar with the genre

it's more of a film essay detailing the rise and fall of the genre, interviews with loads of the key figures

Di Leo's Milieu trilogy is legitimately excellent and lenzi's gang war in milan is great fun

>Frank Wolff as Police Commissioner
>Lionel Stander as The "American"

I like it already.

...

ignore me, meant four flies

Looking for an old western senpai, only remember a single scene from when I was a child. There's some cards game happening in a saloon and someone fires at the men playing, their heads come off and you can clearly see the tubes inside their head spurting blood upwards - emphasis is placed on this shot as it lasted much longer than it should have. I have no time frame for when it came out, only that I saw it on tv about a decade ago. Any dumb fake gory/violent westerns spring to mind?

There are still a couple gems from certain directors. Sorrentino gets some slack on this board, but I really love Il Divo and La Grande Bellezza. Even La Giovinezza I enjoyed, though it's not really an Italian film. Guadagnino I'm not a huge fan of, but I still appreciate some of his work. From the past year there was They Call Me Jeeg Robot, which is worth checking out.

Glad to see all the giallo fans in this thread. I guess good horror is really nonexistant with Italian cinema nowadays. What little films that come out and capture the spirit of those old thrillers are usually just tributes from other countries.

>mfw Tarzan X was one of my first faps
found those CDs in my dad's secret stash kek

those Italians really know how to make quality erotica. Blows American adult films out of the water.

>weird fascination with fucking the clergy
Its almost like they have the Vatican right in there...
