It's not that holding your hand to your sides is awkward inherently, rather that they are in a group photo with their hands to their sides. It makes them appear as though they are not well associated with each other; a group with adequately developed relationships would put arms around each other's shoulders.

Agreed. A good fit is one that contours to the body and accentuates its primary aspect. The primary aspect of an overweight man is shit, so they look shitty.
