Yo La Tengo's albums are too inconsistent for me. I really enjoy the noise pop songs but the slower, less noisier ones just don't do it for me. Compare these two for example.

sonic youth doesn't really use pedals, their noise improvisations are usually done by manipulating feedback with guitars and amps themselves
