If you're using a very wide interpretation of autism, then autism. Bach, Beethoven, Dostoevsky, Pynchon... Having the autism to focus that hard and struggle on and learn the rules. Hardworking autism > drugs. Although drugs can be a great mind opening and influential experience, it is definitely not a short cut to greatness.

Drugs, definitely drugs. Autism doesn't allow that human to be able to think in a way that allows creativity. It's why autistic savant types are more technically gifted than they are createively gifted. Like, look at Stephen Wiltshire's art for example. The dude's able to make very detailed art of real places through an insane photographic memory, but none of that implies actual creativity, just very high technical skill.
