To me, it seemed pretty boring. Lots of scenes involving the water and shoreline, closeups of faces staring into nothing, etc. How do I appreciate this for what it truly is? I didn't get any of the brilliance that all the reviews mentioned.

Unironically read more books and cultivate your appreciation of different aesthetics

Some people have a bland and mediocre taste, they simply cannot comprehend the extaordinary or daring.
At least you tried to peek into that other realm but failed at grasping it. No shame in it. You don't feel enthralled by the display of poetic decay? No problem, there is enough cheesy destruction porn around that you might enjoy.
Nobody can teach you to appreciate art and there is no need to either.

herzog is pretty shit desu. try some wenders instead.

Imagine being Herzog in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Kinski, you fuckin' fine, all those well acted expressions, those real emotions transported through your batshit insane eyes, I would totally make a hundred more films with you, both me as a serious director and the real me” when all he wants to do is filming another documentary about depressed penguins. Like seriously imagine having to be Herzog and not only sit behind your arriflex while Kinski screams again at some extra on his first day, and just sit there, take after take, hour after hour, while Kinski verbally rapes your whole crew. Not only having to tolerate his monstrous fucking visage but his pedophile tendencies as everyone on set tells him he’s STILL GOT IT and DAMN, KINSKI CAN ACT LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch his mannish fucking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before. And then you have to shoot another take, and you know you illegally kidnapped 300 monkeys just for this very film, and that animal activists are just waiting for you outside this goddamn jungle, ready to buttfuck your career, and all you can do is sit there, and film Kinski, and endure, because you're fucking Herzog. You're not going to lose your future political career over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

Wait a few months and then watch it again.

don't watch silence then, wou won't like it

Very entertaining comment!

Go back to watching "Now You See Me 2", simpleton.

Is this the thread where anons pretend to be refined and sophisticated?
SAD!

The film was nothing special. It is very difficult to pull a style-driven narrative. The miniscule character depiction/development didn't do it any favors either

BUMP

wrong

Wrong

This guy knows what he's talking about

I watched this without knowing it's liked and I loved it

watch it with the commentary, it's fucking great

even tho' kinski is a really bad person

Herzog's best film is Bad Lieutenant and theres nothing you can say to convince me otherwise

i had a same situation as op with Vertigo - why the fuck its considered to be so brilliant? because the main character gets a bit mad in the end or what?

kek

This tbqh

Hitchcock is famous for being the first to use many film making techniques, but his actual work is now outdated and irrelevant. Still gotta give the OG his dues

I watched this film a while ago and fucking hated it. I liked his film with the african slaves though, forgot what it's called.

it's a journey to madness, watch slowly how everyone loses its shit

>Lots of scenes involving the water and shoreline

comfy as fuck man

i can easily bow to north northeast or rear window or even fucking bizarre psycho, but not vertigo

was kinski /ourguy/?

well he fucked is preteen daughter so i guess thats a clue.

>How do I appreciate this for what it truly is? I didn't get any of the brilliance that all the reviews mentioned.

maybe stop trying to be a le deep movie snob and watch movies that you actually enjoy

Fitzgerraldo is the superior amazonian film. It is about the same, but everything is just better and kinski even more disgusting.

CITATION REQUIRED

But I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I just didn't feel anything deeper than what was presented and plain to see.

What more can you ask for?

Now put it in the context of the types of movies that were it's contemporaries.

Keep in mind that the characters have no idea what the fuck is going on in the place they're in. Everything they know is based on rumors and they really think they can find a city made of gold.

Also have you ever had a fever dream? It's a lot like that, which is probably intentional since they're all obviously very sick by the end.

yeah man. it's so good you can't remember its name.

Is this aesthetic atmospheric kino like Silence, or dullard near-kino like STALKER?

The soundtrack is excellent

Kinda similar to Apocolypse Now but half the length, a boat floats down the river through jungles looking for a city that doesn't exist and everyone goes insane or dies, and it gets weirder throughout. It's great.

That's actually a way more interesting description than what the trailer was, going to watch it later.

...

faggot

Hard To Be A God was better

This. Artfags don't make money either they just jerk themselves off all day.

Are you aware of the notion that there are different levels of meaning beyond the explicit? Are you the kind of person who says "I didn't like it because nothing happened" about a film? If so I don't know if there's any hope for you. Read a book or something.

both are good though I agree wenders seems somewhat less pretentious

But why? Its really entertaining. Two great wifus.
Its awesome how the protagonist ignores the one who wants his dick..
Some of the shots and scenes are great.
There are some interesting interpretations of the film you can read those and then you will definitely like it more(thats what good interpretations do).

and then those scenes between aguirre and his daughter

fassbinder motherfuckers

47th post best post.
You have to judge it based on its own time.
In any case, dont try to find some deep symbolism or anything like that.
Symbolism is pleb tier.
I think the film is a bit overrated because of the way in which herzog and kinsky worked which still generates a lot of interest and probably always will.
Personally I also did not like it much but I watched it somewhere at work on a small screen.
Some films require your undivided attention and immersion, like a tarkovky film for example.
Some movies simply dont translate well to the small screen and i definitely think this is one of them.
Its interesting from a movie history point of view like many older films.
I think the contemporary climate and conditions make it kind of uninteresting in many ways.

Have you tried Apocalypse Now?

its mudkino

If you want to see if you can into Herzog, watch Fitzcarraldo and see if you like that one.
