Civilians think Marines are some sort of special forces within the Army. They are just over hyped sailors that get to do stuff on land sometimes. They also spend more time on their uniforms than anything else. Perception is what it all comes down to.

With that being said Marines are not on the level by any means of special forces. The SF community is a very small elite section of the military. However due to are size we are more effective for large scale warfare then SFs.
As far as vs army, navy, and air force. We absolutely are far away and better in every aspect. We have always been but in recent times that gap has become larger and larger. All components if the military are being softened today but are highers are doing all they can to fight against it.

From what i've experienced, most marines are fucking loud mouths who will never let you forget in ways both subtle and unsubtle what bad asses they were. Which is probably true. And since they spend so much time parading about their bad assitude, the bravado eventually rubs off on everyone they come in contact with. The hype is real, so I don't really get pissed off over it at all.
The army in general is a joke senpai. Not good at what they do, let alone the weekend warrriors.

Pretty much this. The Marines are smaller, and have fewer support specialties than the Army. Their narrow focus, and smaller numbers have allowed them to maintain higher standards than the other services, especially the Army. It's not that the Army sucks, there are thousands of highly skill and highly professional soldiers, but as a WHOLE the Army cannot maintain standards like the Marines and hope to man all of the jobs that they have to staff to function. The Army is HUGE, and varied. Marines are small and specialized--that usually always means higher standards, whether military or any other profession.
Marines care more about the tightness of their uniform creases than the tightness of their shot group.
More like an entire branch of Army Rangers--it's really the closest comparison that can be made--they're not "elite" compared to JSOC stuff, but they have higher standards than the regular rank and file.
If you knew a marine you would know why. Their old recruiting motto is accurate.

It's all about mission scope and budget. The Corps' mission is high surf zone to 80 miles inland. We get used in other ways because we are smaller and more mobile as an org. The Army has units that have the same deployment readiness standards like the ranger reg. and 82nd. But as a whole the Army is slower because it is massive. Plus the Army is an occupying force, they take space and fortify. The Coprs gets used as a shock troop to attack and move forward and often depends on the Army's log pac. We don't have the greatest military on the planet due to our infantry but because our logistics train is fucking legit. Source I'm a grunt. 2/7 oorah.

To be fair, no one would risk the elite forces the same way they do Marines. Special forces are generally given jobs that have a high survival rate if done properly. I'm not saying they aren't better soldiers; they obviously are, but you still need to respect the front-line maggots.
