When making a film on no budget, how do you go about finding good locations to film?

Bumping for you OP

What's your favorite genre to write? I'm currently on my forth slasher script, I feel like based on the current trend of low budget films made to make a quick 30m they have the best chance of being picked up.

I write a ton of things nothing ever gets finished. A western I wrote and a Sci Fi script are the farthest ive ever gotten at like 20 pages.
I like comedies though. My friends like what I write and think its funny but usually one little mistake can trigger me to delete an entire page. That's why nothing gets done.

I'm a strong proponent of guerrilla filmmaking, imo it's the only thing you can do when you're making a film on a budget of "fuck" and "you".

For example, the Walgreens in this little shitty unfinished short I keep posting here (youtu.be/K-XIm_r6EQs) actually didn't know we were filming behind it on the first day of shooting. We only told them on the second day, and even then they didn't give a single fuck. Weirded out a friend of mine though, he saw us out back and thought we were shooting a porn.

I have another script, pic related, that I'm gonna try and shoot there again soon. I recently got a DJI Osmo so I'm planning on utilizing that despite that meaning I have to shoot on my phone.

I'm aware of the multiple problems this script has, but I haven't shot something in so long I'm dying to do anything at this point.

I feel that. Most of the scripts I start never get finished because the only idea I had for it was a really neat first scene and literally nothing else.

Why aren't these threads as popular as they used to be

>mfw I have nobody to use as actors so I just have to come up with crappy abstract stories and I always imagine how stupid it's gonna be so I give up after one scene
J U S T

bump

My stories tend to be social instead of political. Growing up, responsibility, etc. All that gay shit.

>tfw tried to shoot a short using just myself in a location I've always wanted to shoot in
>tfw that fell through because I had no script nor plan
Fucking useless.

Finishing a screenplay today and tomorrow, thanks for the links OP.

I know you didn't have much control of the camera, being in front of it and all, but the angles and lighting on some of those shots are awkward
Not trying to be rude, just wanna help
Pic related is a kino shot btw

need better sound leveling, look up industry standards for music levels (as in decibels) and try not to go over those. Protip, trust, I had my own problems with that for a while and I still don't have it right.

Hey thanks man. Yeah I was trying to do it all at Magic Hour without really realizing why people do shit at Magic Hour.

I did like that shot but looking at it now it looks dark as all hell. Wish I'd shot that earlier in the day.

Do you have a DSLR?
One thing you can do is go into manual mode, learn how to use that, adjusting aperture to let in more light so the whole frame is filled better.
If you don't have a DSLR, mess with the exposure setting on your camera if a shot is too dark/light.

What is the cheapest acceptable camera a poorfag like myself could use?
I wanna shoot a movie in black and white so it's not like it has to be in 4K

Yeah, that was shot on a Canon 70D.

I hadn't really figured out how to fix Aperture/Exposure/ISO yet when I made that, my only vague understanding being "if you go over 1600 ISO you can go fuck yourself".

They always say use the camera you got, and in most cases that's your phone.

Download FilmicPro for iPhone if you got one, and shoot in color. You can colorgrade it B/W later on, DaVinci Resolve's apparently great for that.

If you want to fuck yourself with grain.
If you're doing video mode, you have to have at least 1/30 shutterspeed, and you adjust aperture to show how much is in focus (the less the range of focus there is, the brighter the image) And ISO basically adds film grain to shit, so I don't fuck with that for the most part.

Thanks m80, I'll keep that in mind.

Ok, I have a Samsung Gs6 and the camera is pretty nice (lots of manual controls so the ISO doesn't ruin dark kino shots)
A goal if mine is to create a full-length film shot entirely on a phone camera, but I've been worried about the feasibility of that lately.

Ever heard about Tangerine? Shot entirely on an iPhone 5s. Was a big deal a couple years ago.

I haven't watched it, but the trailer for it was what got me thinking that I could pull off a similar project.
The main thing I'm worried about is the sound. I don't want it to feel like a home video, but I also don't have money for a ton of sound equipment.
I know I can at least have some decent-looking video using a phone, but I don't know what to do as far as any scene with dialogue that needs to be heard.

I'd strongly recommend getting a cheap voice recorder/boom mic or extensively researching ADR. I'm serious on the "extensively", that shit's difficult as hell.

Another one I want to film at some point.

>character sits on the hood on his car not worried about scratching the paint
>character smashes bottle on the hood of his car, ditto
>cut to black
JUST

>implying that's his car
I actually haven't planned this out at all but this gives me an idea.

Why smash to black? That's what hack directors do. You can be better than that.
>character stares at sunset cliche
>he opens the trunk just to give the girl "no emotion," not even telling her to shut up or beat her or anything.
It makes no sense other than the writer is trying to show the audience she's in there, but Michael should've already known that.
>character pulls out his phone
Does he dial? Or was it an incoming call? Implied that he dialed right? Kind of important point to the story don't you think?
>character needs keys to unlock trunk. Why?
Most trunks have latches to open. Not like she can open it from the inside, especially bound and gagged. Into the trash it goes.
>he takes a deep breath
Why? Is he scared of her? If he's so cool and "emotionaless" why is he so inconsistent from 1 second to the next?
A lot of style and "homages," but where's the originality and plot? You could cut a lot of things out and add better details. This will pass for modern screenwriting, but modern screenwriting is shit. Write more honestly friendo.

This should be the general Sticky.

>I'm getting slammed with "Dishonest"
Shit fucking meme but you make some great points.

What I was trying to get across was that, for some reason or another, Scott was responsible for Nina being in the trunk. Michael's emotionlessness is him trying to keep calm after Scott fucked up, but he fails the second he can talk to him.

>it's a shit meme
Maybe. But it's true. Until filmmakers get over their laziness, they will continue to be dishonest to me.

Don't worry about the aesthetics so much until you've got the plot down. I'd recommend reading some classic literature instead of only watch "cinématographique" like Tarantula or only reading screenplays, because you'll end up like him and make nothing original. You don't have to go to film school or films. Just go to school.

You're probably right, man. I haven't read much, but I've been trying to get back into it. In the middle of reading Neuromancer right now, and despite all the slang it's really fucking fun.

I'll try and get back into reading/writing soon.

Agreed.

Is just plain editing allowed?

I want to take some Season 1 episodes of "The X-Files" and edit them into a full-length movie but I can't find any Blu-Ray rips anywhere online, so I was wondering if any of you could point me to a site that has those (English, no CC, 1920x1080, etc.) cause I don't own any of them.

I'm going to bed now so if you have anything for me just reply and I'll check the archives tomorrow.

>met a bunch of people a couple weeks ago in person about forming a crew
>went well, liked my writing, agreed to work together
>started looking for a producer, final piece of the puzzle
>have had several people engage in emails with me
>back and forth, back and forth
>they're excited, agree to meet
>they disappear and i never hear from them again
this is so fucking annoying, why are you emailing me at all if you don't actually want to work on a project? everything was going so smooth and then i just hit a brick wall.

Film is a visual art. Telling the story through aesthetics is part of the experience. A great can tell a simple story on paper but a complex one in visual. See Diva (1981)

I feel you
