First wave black metal was literally just thrash and "black" and "death" were often used interchangeably in the early 90s.

Sure, there are similarities such as acoustic interludes and whatnot, but bm & dm or thrash are obviously different.
First wave *is* different though, to what most are referring to conventionally as black metal.
