"Escape From Brothel" (1992)
Hands down, one of the best films I've ever watched. Brutal, silly, dramatic, gritty.
Starts out with a 5-minute skinemax David Lynchian peepshow, then jumps into a movie about two prostitutes unwittingly ripping off a rich dude, then spirals into a heist-turned-murder, ending in one of the most brutal fight scenes within a construction site.
Awkward, uncomfortable, erotic, goofy, gory, but well-fucking made.
There are just too many jaw-dropping moments to name:
- Guy fighting martial arts with a naked buff chick, then defeating her and fucking her in one fluid strike.
- Rich guy hiring 2 hookers and trying to do impossible kama sutra moves until he throws his back out.
- Girl getting fucked with a baseball bat by another girl.
- Dude locked in a closet while another guy chokes and fucks dude's wife.
- Guy getting food poisoning and getting major diarrhea while he's trying to escape the mob and the police in the vicinity.
- Innocent white guy tourist getting an eye accidentally blown off by a handgun.
It's a Hong Kong film, but don't look at it like a WuTang endorsed chop-socky flick.
This is the stylistic vibe Refn's "DRIVE" was trying to go for and fell short of achieving.
Think of it that way and you'll come away hungry for more of this type of art.
