See and then Some pollsters are starting to play the old tricks to fabricate results. One of those is to oversample a certain demography.
To explain: assume we have a total population of 1000 individuals, 150 green, 400 blue and 450 red.
Assume there is a poll that selected 100 of those individuals and asked "what is your colour?". Also, assume they respond truthfully.
A true random sample would generally pick individuals in the same proportion as the general population: 15% green, 40% blue and 45% red so the answer would reflect the total population.
But now, assume I had to deliver a poll that put blue ahead of red. All I needed would be to fix the sample just a little bit so I have 11% green, 46% blue and 43% red in the sample.
That is a possibility due to the nature of random sampling but decent pollsters then adjust the sample using the expected weight of each sub group.
Others (like the ABC or the Bloomberg polls) deliver the results as is and even take conclusions on the skewed data.
