Why does Cantonese sound so retarded? I was clicking through videos on Youtube and found this, had a small laughing fit when I realised how they were pronouncing the subtitles

While travelling I've managed to make friends with people from pretty much every culture (even Muslims), but the one people who have always eluded me are the Chinese. They are just a VERY weird people desu, and so incredibly deferential and overly polite that I can't connect with them at all.
Aiden Garcia
Chinese are far uglier than nips and even here korean.

Well dressed? Probably has super rich family that will never accept you, and force him to go back home to take over the business after school even if he wants to stay.
muhaha, nah it's usually down to nasty playboy type who's out to ride the white horse or typical shy Asian type. The shy type is very easy as long as he's single.

College is gonna be tough, since there are no "forced alone time" unlike high school. All it takes is some alone time and chat a bit to get the impression going. Really depends on how much he's westernized tho. ABC and more traditional Chinese shy types are different as well.
Dominic Nelson
Not to mention that we're talking about gay relationships here.

Software Recommendation: > Wenlin (ABC Chinese-English and English-Chinese Dictionaries) Notable Features +Hideous interface +About 200,000 Chinese-English entries for both simplified and traditional characters +Word etymology, example phrases, stroke order, word audio +Handwriting recognition for both simplified and traditional characters Here is the link for Wenlin 4.0.2. I can't find newer versions mega.nz/#!ootmhB4C!U_oKWniqY4IiG5bc6RMLAfr6FcH1tgC1EhPXu-zVr6Y
> Hanping (Android Chinese Dictionary) Notable Features: +Handwriting recognition for both simplified and traditional characters +Character stroke animations, though only 839 are provided for free and you have to buy seperate packs to get the rest. +AnkiDroid support (auto-export words, bulk-export words) +Word tagging with user-defined tags +Optical Character Recognition, though you have to buy that feature as a separate app (Hanping Camera) Basically the poorman's pleco as you can get the pro version of the dictionary and the camera app on mobilism.org. Just register for an account and search the app name. I can't get the camera app to work though.
Other recommendations: To see how a word, phrase, etc. is used in a written context, you can use this corpus manager: corpus.leeds.ac.uk/query-zh.html There are three corpora available: Chinese Internet, Lancaster Corpus of Mandarin, Chinese Corpus of business Chinese.
The dictionary at zhonga.org gives excerpts from tv shows and movies for a given word/phrase. A site with similar functionality but for English is youglish.com.
For stroke-order look up you can use this site: hvdic.thivien.net/ It's in Vietnamese though.
I never understand any of these stupid memes, sometimes I even wonder if the English part is an actual translation or not. >感觉坏男人

There are actually excellent translations of all of them on danbooru. I recommend reading them because they are the kind of translations we need. danbooru.donmai.us/posts?tags=shangguan_feiying

whats the difference between 厂家 and 工厂?
Luke Nguyen
Well that one's especially not gunna make sense translated because the joke is that she's using the "foreign name" characters to make homophones for "handsome fella". Really its all explained in the booru.
Lincoln Torres
工厂 is a factory. 厂家 is manufacturer(s). So you can use it to refer to a maker or company, or even a whole industries.
Jacob Lopez
those two have similar meaning but used in different situation/context
let's just say, if the contexts are in some sort of supplier or vendor stuff, u use 厂家 for instance: - 找厂家供货 - 厂家批发直销
other than that, u use 工厂
anyway there are situations where two words can both be used
John James
from the chinese I have learned that respect all people is important, because they can be useful in the future but how to maintain a massive network of friends and partners? they feel forgotten when you dont talk with them for over a month

I have noticed older Chinese people seem much more open and welcoming to foreigners than the younger generations. Is this a thing or I am just delusional?

You can look this stuff up.
But there are both kinds (although depending on your country it may only be one kind). You just have to make sure you know which kind you are signing up for.

Is there an anki deck like Spoonfed but with traditional? I know Japanese p good already so traditional is a lot easier—plus I'd like to learn Canto too someday—
Alexander Rogers
There was someone who took the normal one and converted it straight to traditional but it might be hard to find. You could probably do it yourself with a script (it might have some mistakes but the deck already has some mistakes so no big deal).
When you're doing spoonfed I recommend doing it as a listening deck, so the hanzi really don't matter that much.
> I know Japanese p good already so traditional is a lot easier
There's no reason not to learn both. Both are pretty easy if you know Japanese and after you learn one enough to comfortably read drama subtitles it's pretty trivial to pick up the other.
Henry Richardson
Agreed, most ppl that only learned simplified usually have no trouble reading traditional by high school or college. Many of the words only have their radicals simplified, so if you remember one you will remember them all. Japanese actually uses half simplified half traditional, countries took inspiration from one another when they went through the same process.

Thanks! I think I'll use the deck as-is as a listening deck and use that Exercises in Written Chinese book that /lang/ recommends (despite the Wade-Giles usage) to pave over any gaps in my knowledge of Traditional.
