Or something like that. In general the levels are in terms of accessibility, someone can feel free to amend. I'm sure I'm missing some names but those are a lot of good starting places. As far as "must watch" that's going to be levels 1 and 2 and the top names of 3. The average "cinefile" has probably gone through most of 4 and those would be considered must watch too if you're trying to dig deeper or looking at film more as art than entertainment. At level 5 you really know your stuff. Level 6 and you're getting into more experimental stuff, a little less to do with your development and more to do with what you enjoy out of films.

Just watch drive and dark knight trilogy

Good list, I'd add
John Carpenter (1)
Mel Gibson (2)
Lumet (2)
Fritz Lang (3)
Shane Carruth (4)
Antonioni (4)
Weerasethakul (5)

Bump because I worked hard on that list and the majority of this board could benefit from it. Added:
Level 3 - Haneke, Ozu, Yang, Powell
Any suggestions?

Edward Yang
Michael Snow
Stan Brakhage
Kenzo Mizoguichi
Claire Dennis
Asghar Farhadi

Additions to the list. Your categorization is pretty good so I'll leave it to you.

George Miller (1)
Andrew Dominik (2)
Wim Wenders (3)
Sergei Eisenstein (4)

Thanks guys. The list now has:
Spielberg
Wilder
Hawks
De Palma
Eastwood
Dominik
Wenders
Renoir
Melville
Erice
Lopushansky
Brakhage
Snow
Mekas

There are a lot of names I know like Chabrol, Cocteau, Malle etc that I haven't seen anything from and wouldn't know how to rank, so any further suggestions are great

Any particular ranking?

copied into a notepad cheers fàm, I need to brush up on 4 onwards aside from a few films/directors

Suprised Pier Paolo Pasolini isn't on yet.

Some more avant-garde filmmakers to bulk up level 6.

Andy Warhol/Jack Smith
Ben Rivers
Hollis Frampton
Patrick Bokanowski
Oskar Fischinger

If you think any of them need to be lowered once again. I'll leave it to your discretion.

I remember I had to catch an extremely late viewing to The Sky Trembles and the Earth Is Afraid and the Two Eyes Are Not Brothers and my god I had to fight the sleep. I loved Two Years at Sea but man when it comes to experimental films it truly is a gamble.

Fletch

Thanks for the recs mate. I look forward to one day completing this list and becoming a true patrician.

>im new to Sup Forums what are some must watch movies??
They're films you dip

mainly this

add fincher to level 1 and move kubrick up to level 2. that's a no brainer. really surprising no one else has said it.

I'm surprised no one has combined the two yet

problem child 2

>films
they're kinos, you pleb

Electric Boogaloo 3: Electric Boogaloo

>no michael bay

The fuck is that? The level of how fucking shit you are?

Every Christopher Nolan movie

It's pasta to pretend people have taste and to trick people into watching utter shite which is just boring and awful but allows them to act like hipster contrarian fucknuts to scoff at the plebs while they twirl their cane and swish their capes.

>this much euphoria
I can almost smell the hot pockets & sweat.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Imagine being this insecure about your taste. You know most people watch films not to look down on others but because they too personally enjoy watching them? If I watch Dreyer or Rohmer, it's because their films affect me. You have just as much of a right to watch and enjoy Christopher Nolan, and you're no less than me for doing so. But no, if you didn't like the film, everyone else must be pretending. Everyone's out to get you user.

>kinos
they're flicks, you embryo
