Americans Squandered 658 Million Vacation Days Last Year

>It’s happened again: Americans are leaving millions of unused vacation days on the table—658 million of them to be exact. According to a new study by Project: Time Off, the average U.S. worker took only 16.2 days of paid time off in 2015 and 55% of the 5,600 people surveyed didn’t use all of their vacation time.
>The new survey reveals that more people are taking less time off. From 1976 to 2000, the average number of days workers took off was 20, almost four more than last year. And 2014’s study showed only 42% of Americans had unused days, making this year the first time since the survey began that a majority of workers aren’t using all their paid time off.
>All of this equates to about $61.4 billion in lost benefits for workers, and some $223 billion in lost travel-related spending in the United States.

Wageslaving isn't just a meme feels bad.

>take vacation
>get secretly reprimanded

"Why would you want to spend time not at work user? Don't you love working for us?"

We don't fuckign squander them. We save them up for long fucking vacations.

I can only see that happening in major financial institutions in the UK. Otherwise we think you're retarded fornot using it all.

Only that never happens you fucking faggot.

Americans don't take vacation days because they have nothing else to do. Why vacation (and deal with the phone calls, the headache, the gf moaning, the exorbitant cost) when I can just wake up, grab coffee, and enjoy work?

Not necessarily true.

There's some people who have like 3 months of vacation time that mostly goes unused because it's a risk on their job security if they use too much. It's weird and retarded but that's how my dad says it is in the software security world

>>All of this equates to about $61.4 billion in lost benefits for workers
How did they come up with this conclusion? Those benefits don't magically disappear. Vacation days accumulate, although some employers do have caps. If I only use 15 days for one year that just means I have even more next year.

There's two sides to this. One side is the fact that technology is abundant, and you can pretty much see anything anywhere in the world, and you can watch movies whenever etc.

Or the 2nd side

>economy is going to shit
>standard of living is rising
>wages aren't climbing
>people are trying to get all the money they can without having a day off.

>wagecucking
>having a GF
:^)

>Vacation days accumulate
For some jobs you only have a set number of days that you can either use or lose by the next year.

many employers cut you a check at the end of the year for your unused vacation time.

MANY OF THEM.

i wonder if they took this into account.

I take 1-2 sick days a year if that.

Lel
Here around 3-4 weeks off for summer is the usual for workers.
Then there's week long holiday in autumn.
Bit over a week for Xmas+New Year
"Skiing holiday" in late winter.
Not to mention easter + plus few other holidays.

Muricans and Japs are perfect little worker drones.

You get slave wages for those hours though

I only get 3 days of vacation a year. Used 2 last year.

What's the purpose to live your life this way?

>be me
>work as an archaeologist
>travel as part of my job
>every single day is enjoyable, look forward to discovering things
>majority of my time is vacation - conversing with locals, eating new foods, hitting up foreign bars, fucking chicks, and learning new languages
>still get paid a six figure salary
>I only had to wageslave for a year to pay off what little loans I had from uni

Feels good, man.

>Exorbitant cost
m8 you're paid vacation time. Anything else is just time off.

my last job offered 2 weeks vacation after 2 years and 3 weeks vacation after 10 years

Wha..
Does being NEET only work if you have rich parents?

I honestly like working.
I can't stand nature and I can't stand most places on the planet.
No idea what I would even do on vacation.

My job is pretty easy and not stressful. Besides my job I don't do anything but talk to the wife and stay home for now.

We can take vacation days, they just aren't paid usually.

Hell, we get weekends off too usually.

I work service industry and took a month off to go to Aus. Sure, I had to scrap the cash together before and after but my job was still there.

Get a job, get a wife, get a house. So is that The American Dream everybody's talking about? Sounds pretty boring to me.

I would honestly rather have paid sick days than vacation time.

> get paid vacation
> work instead

How does your bosses assholes taste like ?

living in a shithole seems pretty boring too but there you are

>archaeologist
>pretending to have a job

I'm Australian and any unused leave accumulates which if not taken is paid out on retirement/dismissal. I've got like $15,000 of leave saved up. My employed hasn't forced me to use any for like 3 years for whatever reason so I'm probably just gonna keep not using it until I decide to quit or move on to something different.

You've never been here but still talking shit about it. Stay mad, wagecuck.

Ask your HR to cash it out now in case they try to pull some shady stuff when you quit or get fired. It will do a lot better in some sort of index or retirement fund

This. In our country people consider you a literal retard for not using your vacation time.

>but user, don't you want to go on wintersport this year like the rest of us?
>but user, why no beautiful Thailand this year?
>where is your tan, user?

But everyone knows burgers get fucked in the ass by their employers and call the privilege freedom. Fuck the globalist scum trying to bring those working conditions here.

>I can't stand nature and I can't stand most places on the planet.
Have you ever been to "most places on the planet"? I mean shit, this is actually sad..

Belarus looks like a more depressing version of New Jersey.

I had something similar happen. I worked for about 3 years at a casino and due to the flexibility of my work hours I never needed to take holidays. If I wanted time off, I would swap shifts around with my co-workers to get a week off. When I eventually quit, I got paid out 11k.

>go to Europe during half of the year for the last 2 years
>family is always giving me shit for doing nothing but "having fun"

You're a next level cuck here if you're not self employed. My mom has like 35 days of PAID vacation saved up from the last 10 years. She literally uses like 4 per year to take a random Friday off and go shopping. That's it.

>I honestly like working.
>I can't stand nature and I can't stand most places on the planet.
They call it "American work ethic". We call it slavery.

There's no shady shit they could pull to screw me out of it. Even in the even a business goes bankrupt you just have your previous employer show the ATO that outstanding payments would result in further hardship and the ATO will pay it. I'm sure there's some kind of penalty for the employer but I don't know or care if there is.

Still you've never been anywhere in the world. You can't compare a shit. Get a life, m8, seriously.

Daniel Jackson pls.

Been to most continents. Ex-girlfriends would make me travel with them. I never enjoyed it.

>American work ethic
Always nearly shit myself laughing when I hear that stupidity.

I once had a conversation with a Canadian who worked for a software company, he got like 2 weeks holiday per year. They worked him like a slave and he was proud of the privilege.
He honestly believed that if he didn't work like a slave his country wouldn't be competitive anymore. When I explained to him the proven benefits of sufficient holidays on productivity, and that Europe is perfectly competitive in a modern economy in spite of our terrible lax "work ethic" he didn't know what to say. Depressed him a little I think, but he's probably got Stockholm syndrome at this point.

Somehow it never occurs to people that simply hiring slightly more employees to work less hours each would actually make all employees more relaxed and productive. Instead, unpaid overtime to save a few hundred bucks a month by working your slaves beyond the window of productivity seems like a good idea.. Why?

>beautiful Thailand
I will never understand this meme. My mother's an immigrant from there so I've had to spend some time on and off there. It's shit, the city air stinks of it, and the rural areas there's shit on the sides of the road, too. But given that it's close to India I really shouldn't be surprised.

he is right u know

You're right, a lot of people do that. I work at the moment with a benefits management company that handles US worker fringe and voluntary contribution benefits. In most states, there is a law that allows 'use it or lose it' rules and also bans lawsuits for unused vacation days that are lost for going 'stale'. The same goes for your school/college savings accounts, your health savings and a variety of other little gimmicks (opt-in benefits and the like) you Amerikeks back home get.

I have a goal to retain and grow my portfolio's value add, which means every year skimming non-exempt employees' accounts and profiles for neglected benefits and stale balances, then returning to the company with a report. This year, my bounty is higher, about 2%, on top of my position' salary. If you are not mad yet, I also rubber stamp detected benefit policy violations or accusations of those. AND I disallow repayment of losses from neglect or error with vacation days (more common than it sounds).

I introduce processes, forms, steps and approvals into every stage of your benefits usage outside of ACA-covered items. Parental leave? We need an official, stamped, raised proof of birth and we asked you to inform us 6 weeks before projected birth, user. I'll be calling you every week to see how the family is coming along and to gently prod you to come in for a few hours for a few meetings if you have the time.

The second you do, PL ends, which is policy at most companies that gets around PL. Yes, you will have several red flags in your file. If you are good at managing your benefits, the last thing you will offered is a raise or change in position to one with more. And over here, I have a room full of cheap accountants and phone handlers, all harvesting your benefits so I can be paid, and taking your angry calls for your company.

America is wonderful and grand. I am piling up Ameribucks from the scams you people sucker up for every year. Enjoy your benefits. I sure do.

Hot and humid as fuck too, why the fuck anyone would voluntarily go to thailand is beyond me.

>Why?
Seems like most of them are just brainwashed from their early childhood. Parents told them they'll be disgrace to their family or even homeless if they don't work their ass out. Seems quite logic to me considering the fact they have no possibility to experience another way of life.

I stopped taking vacation days once I realized all I do is sit at home and do nothing with them.

Thank you, user. Depending on your salary, you may constitute a measurable increment in my income and my company's balances.

It's white people that aren't taking their vacation days.

I only use them during the summer so I can go on vacation with my kids.
I don't do winter sports or anything like that so I don't take vacations in the winter and I work a job that has great hours.
I would do the same on a day with or without vacation but on one side I get 8 hours more to watch shitty movies and sleep

>tfw American Worker
>Average 65-80 hours a week at $11.50 an hour before overtime (kicks in at 40 hour mark)
>Seriously demanding manual labor (construction, maintenance, handyman work, landscaping)
>I could be in high demand overseas due to my work ethic and near 100% attendance at work (few sick calls, few call ins) as well as varied skills
>tfw stuck in America with no financial escape

We may be wageslaves but for fucks sake we're good at being it.

Also for the Georgian poster
I work for my cities Parks & Rec department would that affect your business in any form

>>TFW when I realize that my whole lifestyle is build around harvesting your slack. I figuratively eat your benefits and then drink your salty tears. Then also receive a salary I just toss in my retirement account.

>65-80 hours a week
>average

I think it's more around 40 hours. You have a crap job, m8.

Either way its better invested than not accruing interest

You gotta know where to go, tbhqfamilia.
The same probably goes for India, I made the mistake of doing city travel when I visited.

Visit the European countryside if you want to go somewhere. Rent a car and drive through the south of France, you won't regret it.

In my studies of global politics, this isn't surprising

One of the key reasons for America's past economic dominance has been the American's work ethic, its astounding, and I only say past because of China's rise, and they are helped by having over double the population and they are still not clear economic hegemons

America's work ethic is one of the key features of its political landscape, its why we've never seen a strong socialism movement in the US and why we probably won't, America is a hyper-capitalist nation where the American dream is still there, even if its not.

>We may be wageslaves but for fucks sake we're good at being it.
Wow that's impressive. I mean, really.

I would like to coin a phrase I just came up in for this. " Use it or lose it vacation time"

No. It's 60-80.
I work from (8pm/9pm)-(7am-11am) five days a week.
Welcome to Texas.

Can you go into full detail on how your company works and functions? Is it dependant on international loopholes? What kind of degree do you have, and what's your company name? I'm legit curious for entrepreneur reasons.

my cousins work forces you to take vacation

Paid sick days get abused a lot by women.

Working hard =/= working smart, America is cucked by the ghost of its past. Work in modern times requires ever increasing amounts of creativity and flexibility, all things which are suppressed by the old system of factory-style hard labor.

I love working, idle hands are the devils workshop.

For US public employees, it depends on your contract (most have contracts). IN shitty places like San Diego, school employees (even the union ones) are really fucked, and the County, as well as the cIties of El Cajon, Imperial Beach, Del Mar, Carlsbad and some others I cannot think of, as well as Orange County in that state, are all getting the fat cock up the ass.

It's the same with Bakersfield and a whole bunch of inland places in that state. Public employee contracts can limit our reach, which is fine, but man... there seems to be a whole part of California that is governed to fuck you as hard as Texas fucks its employees. And TEXAS! It's the dream portfolio. They are the one place where the client actually pushes people to max their health and other savings accounts, then harvests the shit out of them ASAP. The girl who has that portfolio is a former trailer park urchin who graduated Baylor in Hospital Administration and Finance. We fuck sometimes.

I happen to work on what we call the "boomer tech" portfolio and PACA (Public Agencies, California). Most rec divisions have been juiced dry by the cities themselves, and many positions have no contract, no benefits, and no full-time employees or benefits. But kudos to you on getting a job making other peoples' slack more manageable..

In most companies it is the same thing, you get x number of "personal days".

i never got breaks at my last few jobs. we're legally supposed to have them, but it didn't matter to 3 different bosses. they just fire you. and hardly any vacation. what's this about a week?

I can save up to 800 hours of vacation without it being lost, no matter how long it's in my account. If I am fired, quit, retire, or die, they will pay it out in one lump sum.

I earn 2 hours per week. So no, the fact that I'm "not using" my vacation doesn't mean that it is lost.

It's not like I don't do anything at all. My wife is Italian and I was just there last year and stay there for a couple months. I still kept my job but was just put on leave for awhile. I have been in more places in the world than most people. I have traveled too much and right now just enjoy being home. I am moving to Europe soon. The U.S. is great job wise but as for where I want to be I think I belong in Europe. I personally loved it there. I was in Germany and Italy. Moving to Italy at the end of the year.

I noticed Europeans seem pretty lazy when it comes to work. Always closing early and always some bullshit holiday. I don't mind working but I understand hard work deserves time off and relaxation I just think people get too lazy when it is used too often.

I've been to South East Asia, didn't really like it.

Been to the Middle East, I fucking hated it so by default I think I'd hate Europe too.

Migt give the UK a couple years to uncuck itself before gloing there but honestly I could go to other states and still see something new.

I was in the military and I remember going crazy with boredom after 2 weeks of leave, why would the civilian world be different?

And to think we do it to ourselves.

My money is based on OT
Also, what am I going to do with a day off?
Post on Sup Forums?

don't you guys accrue vacation leave over years?

I've only taken a few days leave over the last year and I now have over 4 weeks saved up that I can use at any time. If I leave the job it gets paid out in full

I love how neetfags can't fathom the idea of somebody enjoying their job

americans live to work, europeans work to live

I have a shitty job and I'd do that rather than sit at home doing nothing

There are no international loopholes at play. We are simply a firewall between loose management of benefits and recovery of potential lost productivity or capital. Often, in administrations where they are unwilling to collect taxes enough to cover bare costs of operations, they have us do both the granting of/approval of and the recovery of benefits and vacation use. That's usually kekked Red-California local governments.

When some cop loses his vacation days or some fireman loses his HSA balance, we are the ones that take the phone call. We are the convenient scapegoat. We are indemnified in almost every case and then can countersue against false claimants.

Our business model is 'thank you and fuck you very much'. The boomer tech companies are disgusting. These are basically tech companies that are so dominated by investors that the founders and the culture have been cubicleized and corporatized.

One week we harvest the anniversary benefit losses. The next week, the boomer HR manager calls and puts on a show about how pissed he is and how unfair it is for 'his people'. A few hours later, that old fuck calls and thanks us, and 'no, don't restore the vacation days, it's fine, user.'

I have several degrees. In our organization, to be a portfolio manager, you must have at least a BA in a business, law or media field. The latter because they can dig up leads and prospects according to news reports and profile the potential decision makers for other PMs.

I have an MIM (Masters degree in Management) and double BA in International Relations (Trade and Treaty Law minor) and Public Relations.(Public Affairs emphasis). But my real job is taking the power of greedy people and using it for them so they can fuck your ass bloody. I have sometimes back-stabbed people who blamed us too much then tried to cancel contracts. I will fuck a life up and you will know you can do nothing about it. We all work on internal pseudonyms, just like the guys in Hyderabad.

>europe competitive
lol

Correction...

>American MEN squandered...

Real men do not take time off. Days off are for menstruation and the like. Also if you can take a week off at a time your job is superfluous.

Wow, americans are pretty fucked up. I would much rather live in a poor eastern european country or a cucked western one than in america.

Then you are in the right place.

I wish I had 658 million days off in a year 2bh

Freedom doesn't take days off.

>if you can take a week off at a time your job is superfluous

Yeah, tell that to my father who runs a multimillions worth company and who just took 2 weeks off. Git gud in productivity, m8.

i can't even remember the last time i went on vacation

Get with the program you lazy shiftless negro

American wage-cuck/-slave here.

Never in my working life over the last 18 years have I taken vacation during various jobs, a few I held for a year and two.

Because I'm a wageslave robot (Czech word for slave, ironically enough), I fear repercussion and/or reprimand such as refusal to promote me just because I ask to take a vacation, at busy retail stores and restaurants.

Even though they may praise me for being a hard-working employee that is an asset to their companies, since I happen to resemble the German-American (I'm a mutt but mostly look like a German), I am fearful that if I take vacation, I would feel bored and not know what to do with my free time for a week or even two if I accumulate vacation days for a second employment year without taking a vacation after a year.

It's true that there are American bosses who think drone bees, like me, do not need to take a vacation for a long time.

I have never heard of the state or federal labor law that suggest vacation time as the right or privilege. Vacation time is left up to each employer to determine the policy. The employers can flat-out deny vacation time to any employee below manager position, if that's to their preference to work the wage slaves to exhaustion that could lead to turnover.

Fear of reprimand for asking to take a vacation, even after a year of working hard and being consistent and having to kiss ass all the time, might be a standard in America.

There is such thing as "American work ethics," when really it means we are the goyim who must work hard and long to appease Israel and the corporate bosses, top to mid-level and assistant.

America is the ultimate goyim slave for corrupt federal, state, municipal and city governments, as well as appeasing Israel with billions of dollars in endless monetary support.

At least Germany, however cucked, mandates weeks of vacation time by law for the employed people, this making it the most efficient Western economic producer in the world.

you can't use anything you don't know your entitled to. this is store-level management of megacorp chains shitting on their minimum-wage slaves. there are a lot of clueless fuckwits at the bottom of the pyramid working 60-hour weeks and thinking they're lucky for the overtime pay, not giving any thought to other benefits because they've been told by 'the good boss' that they're trash anyway.

As someone who hates taking vacation days, let me tell you that having time off is boring as fuck if you have no money and a real drag when you come back to a place being in disrepair because you couldn't keep things together.

Albeit, I'm only 23, I spend money responsibly, and want to be able to keep some savings in case of emergency, so I'm probably not indictative of most people in this country who blow their paychecks at the bar and are scrounging for change by Wednesday every fucking week.

Plus I don't really hate my job. It's easy work for a decent amount above minimum. Took me 4 years to finally get to fulltime and a few good yearly raises, but it's really nowhere near as bad working in customer service as some people think when you work for the right company in a small town and actually strive to make your store a place that positively affects the hundreds of people that come in on your shift. It's a plus that I get to listen to music through my shift too. I'm pretty fucking lucky.

No it's literally illegal to not use your holiday, your work will literally force you to take holiday if you're under the legal minimum.

>Archaeologist
>six figure salary

>get a month off from work every year
>don't take it anyways since I love my job too much
>spend spare time learning more about how I can become better at doing my job when I'm not working anyways
What's the point?

This.

I'm 'given' 3 weeks of vacation, which in the US is very fortunate (came from a job that gave 2 DAYS/yr).

I lost a week of vacation last year just because I couldn't take the time off. I'm worked hard and my cunty colleagues won't pick up my slack.

My boss said I couldn't use my vacation. I may as well have 3 months of vacation in my contract.

>>don't take it anyways since I love my job too much
what is this meme I keep seeing about loving your wageslave job? If you're going to write this, write a few more words and say what it is that you do.

You know I was watching this vid on this page. newzealandnow.govt.nz/why-choose-nz/compare-new-zealand/USA this guy said everything is a lot more lax in NZ and they had to remind him to take time off, which is unusual.

I moved here from Germany but I think Americans have less interests and personality because they spend way more time working and less time having fun. That's what the welfare niggers have as their only advantage. All of their freetime enables them to be creating "art" and make shitposts on fb and twitter.

We need to empower our NEETs and win this battle.

I work as a overhead lineman. The adrenaline you get from doing it is second to none. And not to mention the good feels you get when you go on storm team when you have to help cucks who need electricity to survive. But I mean as a tradesman you have a obligation to fall in love with your trade and strive to become the best in it. I'm 23 and I'm a lead lineman which is unheard of in my utility. Hell I don't think I will ever retire from my work since I love doing what I do so much. I love being outside and I love the demands that are placed on me.
Oh and I already have enough money to buy a nice house and I have about 250k in retirement that I most likely won't use anyways.

I go to Miami for work reasons and I have met many Cubans who ended up moving back no joke because they found out you actually have to work a lot to have an apartment and all that.

Fuck me. This is a little bit too close to home
