From what I've understood, it's an American thing. There religion is a bigger deal than here AFAIK and atheists are being really vocal about their atheism while LARPing as far-left nutjobs in general.

This belief is known as Pantheism. It's actually a religious ideology that has existed for quite some time and most scientists who believe in God adhere to this ideology in some way.
