Today marks the anniversary of one of the most glorious and greatest victories in European history , The Great Siege of Malta that took place in 1565.
On this day a defending army of around 9,000 men made up of Knights Hospitallier , Maltese, Italian, Greek and Spanish soldiers and Maltese civilians drawn from the local population under the leadership of French Grandmaster Jean De La Valette defeated an invading Ottoman Muslim army of around 48,000 men after a brutal 3 month siege.
The most epic moment during the Siege was when the Ottoman Muslim invaders floated the headless corpses of captured Knights across the Grand Harbour. The act was returned in kind: La Valette ordered all Turkish prisoners to be executed and their heads used as 'cannon balls' to fire back toward their compatriots.
