Goal keepers are the middleground. A bad - good goalkeeper will get blamed for every single goal conceeding but a World Class goalkeeper will receive credit for every single parried shot, no matter how piss easy it was. Defender on the other hand are just forgotten.

Although I do agree with you, there are some outliers here. The Italian national team comes to mind. I guess because defending has been in their culture for so long, defenders are actually pretty high profile. Immediately Cannavaro and Chielini come to my mind.
