This, but massive fault lies in the League of Communists who themselves were nationalists instead of enforcing the Yugoslav values and keeping the country together. Nationalist uprisings weren't crushed because there was no political will to do it. According to some interviews I read, the army was ready for a coup in the early '90s only if there was a strong unionist political leader behind it which they couldn't find. And when civil conflicts happened, the army lost control and massive desertion took place. Basically each and every governing body and organisation took a massive shit on themselves just to enable redistribution of wealth in a manner illegal in the SFRY while riding on the nationalist sentiment. And today the same type of people make up the political class in the ex-yu countries.

Originally we are a product of mixing of both West and South Slavic people. But those differences were close to zero in 550 when we arrived to the eastern Alps.
Roughly in 1000AD the Hungarians wedged us from our Pannonian brothers - the Nitrans and Moravians. From that time on we have slowly South-slavicized ourselves and the only West Slavic feature we're left is our language and you really have to dig deep if you want to find those features
